My spoilery thoughts.
Under a cut for people who want to go in with no expectations. Good luck to those avoiding spoilers, I didn't manage it myself but may the force be with you.
So!
That was an enjoyably mediocre film.
They went for the most cautious, crowd pleasing, substance-less conclusion possible. There were pretty set pieces and cool explosions and thrilling space battles and tense light sabre fights. There was a lot of hugging and talking about togetherness in the face of insurmountable odds. The plot, motivations, etc don't hold up to serious thought, and contradicted themselves and the previously established themes. There is zero social commentary, or anything very challenging or surprising. What plot there is was spoiled by the trailers. It's maybe kinda racist.
But Rey got to be badass and evil was defeated etc (I am not counting that as spoiler :P)
Cam complained about some of the gratuitous cameos taking up time that could have been spent on actual story, but I said to him: what story? There is nothing to this film. There's no good movie hiding under the surface that could have been brought out with better scene choices. It's all surface. So why not have some of that surface be fanservicey cameos, it's fun for a moment, and "fun for a moment" is all this movie has to offer.
