XOXO Droplets: Bae path reactions
Sep. 30th, 2019 10:02 pmMasterlist
Time for the prissy, condescending, highly punchable Bae. Who was actually really cute! Also he turned out to be asexual, and that was handled pretty well.
Something I don't discuss in my post but was bothered by in the game: He has very low energy: he walks slowly, avoids exercise, and needs to sit down a lot. This is only ever treated as him being lazy, I would have liked there at least to be a moment where someone checks to make sure he doesn't have any sort of health problem etc but no :/
Bae: You can't be serious.
MC: I am.
Bae: Let me rephrase: you shouldn't be serious. Surely there's someone more fitting you could go on a date with.
MC: Too bad, I'm not changing my mind.
Bae: Too bad for you, maybe.
I am intrigued!
Based on a couple of dates, the problem with Bae is similar to that with Everett: he's happy enough to admit to finding MC moderately attractive and fun to be around. But in an insulting, self serving way that emphasises how great he is and how lucky she should feel for dating him.
Where Everett thinks he's cooler than everyone else, Bae thinks he's smarter and more mature than everyone else. Everett's fuckboy entitlement is slightly less annoying than Bae's sugary patronising sarcasm, but Bae is significantly cuter than Everett, so it's swings and roundabouts.
Ha! So Bae is the first guy who doesn't just follow MC's orders (possibly with some pretence of putting up a fight) She has to actually persuade him to do what she wants, and it doesn't always work. He and Nate both have a pretty domineering, arrogant vibe which is one reason I've been putting them off, but since MC is so domineering herself it so far has averaged out to the two of them snarkily making fun of each other and then coming to a compromise.
I could do with less of him implying she's stupid, but he's clarified that he just thinks everyone other than himself is stupid.
MC barely persuades Bae to go on a date to the beach, and he just stands around being unhelpfully quiet until Pran happens by.
Bae: Pranny! Come chat :D
Pran: No. You're on a date. And I don't want to 'chat' with you.
Bae: Maybe she and I just happened to bump into each other :)
Pran: So that's how stupid you think I am.
Bae: Fine, technically it's a date, but she doesn't mind.
Pran: MC I would say you should find someone better to date but everyone is awful.
MC: Bae, you don't even like Pran. You're just being a pain because you didn't want to come here.
Bae: I would never :D
Pran: I would.
MC: Heh maybe having Pran around would make this date more entertaining.
Pran: Why do you spend time together if you're just going to whine about the other?
MC: I like his dumb face and he's entertaining, sometimes.
Bae: Oh, why thank you, muffin. I'm soooo flattered.
Pran: >:( *leaves*
This game stars out swear words as inoffensive as "hell" but had MC call Bae "a sarcastic c**t." o.O Isn't that a super bad word in the US??
I love the unexpected little character notes in this game. For example, Bae is forgetful and always losing things/locking himself out of his room etc. He manages to mostly laugh it off but it's endearingly moe.
Bae cheerfully admits that his type is a short version of himself, which in this group means Jeremy.
On the school trip, MC gets Bae to explain what happened with Jeremy to cause the room drama that happens every game. At last!
Bae: I forgot that Jeremy doesn't like to be paid attention to. And the truth is...I like pajamas.
MC: And?
Bae: I really like pajamas. That's why I asked to share a rom with Jeremy, I he wouldn't disappoint. They're so darling I can hardly stand it.

(This is the style all the CGs are in. I don't like it, but I know CG artists are expensive)
In Bae's opinion it's usually other people's fault when what he says hurts their feelings, but he was in the wrong this time and wants to apologise. Doesn't stop him angling to see Jeremy in his PJs at breakfast time (MC is fine with it as long as she can check out Bae in his)
He's speechless for a moment when she asks him out, and says he'd assumed he wouldn't date until college, but is willing to date her (he manages not to make this sound like much of a compliment) When she wants to make out he blushes and says that's a bit much but they'll find something to do.
The guys in this game are all so weird about kissing!
Aw but at the meeting when Nate's like "But WHY are you dating" he says MC is more mature than she gives the impression of being. Shiloh is taken aback but then awkwardly wishes them congratulations, aw.
WHOA when she asks if she's his first love he straight up tells her he's asexual!
Her first reaction is to feel bad for making him uncomfortable with all the come ons, aww, but he says they're just funny. "I don't mind small romantic gestures, on occasion. I get nothing out the action itself. Humouring you, however, is always a pleasure. And I have to get married and have children, so I may as well get used to some of it now."
When she says he doesn't have to get married he changes the subject. After some poking he says his previous crushes were on a teacher (gender unspecific, and they both use ungendered terms for this whole conversation) and a friend's aunt.
*has flashbacks to that one time during my Phd when a teenage student got a crush on me and expected me to validate him unsubtly implying how much smarter and more mature he was than all my other students while they were there*
Nnng. I don't find Bae quite as punchable as I did at first, and he's cute with MC, but he's still a very annoying guy, and I can't imagine wanting to spend any time in his company let alone dating him. But MC is happy with him, so. On we go!
Bae's parents are Korean, and he describes them as "very encouraging, highly supportive, and never disciplinary".
MC: Why would they need to show tough love to a child as flawless as you?
Bae: Fair point. But also some other little ones tried to bully me in elementary school. I didn't notice, but my parents tried to counteract it with positive reinforcement.
I'm a little iffy on an East Asian character being asexual, prissy, intellectually arrogant etc. But in a game where everyone has so many negative characteristics it's hard not to hit some unfortunate combinations.
He's been pretty clear on seeing any highschool relationships as something to leave behind when he graduates, so we'll see how that goes.
MC: So, Bae, how do you feel about your friend Shiloh always flirting with your girlfriend? Aren't you worried he'll steal me away?
Bae: That's just his way. And you can't 'steal' a girlfriend. If you chose him over me, that would mean I wasn't being a good enough boyfriend.
MC: That's weirdly reasonable.
Bae: And I would know to place the blame on the person who left me for something as petty as not flirting enough :)
MC: Point taken. What's your take on this Shiloh? Don't you want me to date you instead of your good friend Bae?
Shiloh: ... >.>
Bae: That's not a fair question and you know it.
MC: You really are a good friend, Bae.
Bae: I'm only being reasonable.
MC: Yeah this is a totally reasonable situation we've got going on. But whatever, it's good for me :)
(I don't ship Bae/MC/Shiloh, in the end, even though it doesn't require much squinting. Bae and MC can do better, and are pretty happy as they are)
One good thing about Bae's constant sarcasm is how much enjoyment MC gets from pretending to take him literally if she knows it will piss him off. Plus sometimes they get into good natured sarcasm-offs, or snark together about people they think are dumb.
So, as expected (since the group divides into pairs of nemeses) Nate and Bae hate each other. I think because they both like to present themselves as better than everyone else because they're doing school etc Right, but they have different approaches: Nate follows the rules perfectly and wins at everything, Bae acts like he's better than the rules and that the competition is meaningless. Nate even tries to persuade MC to dump Bae in a way that could be read as him being into her but mainly reads as him just hating Bae that much.
MC: You look even more like a future super-villain than normal tonight, congrats. All you need is a red rose.
Bae: I did consider getting you a rose, actually, but I knew you'd tell me I should have gotten you candy or something useful. So I pre-emptively decided you didn't deserve a gift.
MC: Haha you know me so well. When you inevitably take over the world I hope you won't forget me.
Bae: I would never.
MC: Let's dance.
Bae: Only if you let me lead.
MC: We'll take turns.
They're pretty cute.
MC: Why do you talk in that goofy insincere way?
Bae: It's how I talk to children and those I have no respect for :)
MC: WTF. Why are you even dating me if you have no respect for me?
Bae, in a totally different tone than normal: Oh! I'm sorry. That wasn't the reaction I was expecting.
MC: ...OH YOU WERE MESSING WITH ME I AM SO STUPID
Bae: Stupid is a harsh word. It was uncharacteristic of you though.
MC: Aww you admitted to having respect for me.
Bae: I don't believe it's a secret, muffin.
MC: True. But I'm still going to have fun with it. You were such a sweetie pie just then, caring about my feelings. Adorable.
Bae: Don't I always say how I'm concerned for everyone?
Aw.
As expected, he tries to break up with her around graduation, but when she insists on staying together it becomes clear he assumed she wasn't interested in the sort of relationship he wants: committed, monogamous, with an eye to marriage and lots of children. Or at least, not with him. When she says she is, he's happy to stay together 'for now', I think he thinks she'll get bored.
At graduation he asks if she's really sure she wants to stay together, she says yes, but that he's free to dump her if he wants. He says no, he's happy, and they walk into the future together.
THE END
