When They Cry
Sep. 7th, 2019 03:30 pmMe: I should finish Gentleman Jack or Good Omens.
My brain: Nope. Too tense.
Me: Ok, lets see what's new on Netflix...hmm, just that horror anime When They Cry, but obviously that's too-
My brain: WATCH THAT
So I've been watching When They Cry, which unsurprisingly is SOMETIMES TOO TENSE FOR MY BRAIN, and is also kinda male gazey, with art and animation only slightly better than the notoriously ugly original game. But I'm still enjoying it!
The opening gets across the feel pretty well.
Below: No spoilers beyond the first few minutes, some description of violence.
It's based on the classic Japanese Visual Novel "Higurashi: When they cry" which I tried playing ages ago, but it doesn't have any choices and I ran out of momentum pretty early on. I've found the anime much easier to get into. Also the anime is kinda cheap loking, but the game is...well. Often used to cheer up VN makers about how good writing can overcome even the worst art.
I'll get into my spoilery reactions in a different post, but the anime begins with a flash-forward to the protagonist beating his female schoolfriend to death with a baseball bat...and then immediately switches to fluffy slice of life Teen Shenanigans involving these friends, and their little Japanese Mountain Town in the 1980s. And then, slowly but surely, things get increasingly strange...
The horror aspects can be a bit campfire-story narmy, and the characters are a bit obviously aimed at teen boys (Relatable Male Protagonist, Hot Female Friends Who Think He's Great, Cute Younger Girls etc) But there's enough genuine emotional and narrative complexity that I still care about these characters and what happens to them. Which can be pretty affecting what with the...beating each other to death with a baseball bat thing...
I'm just finished episode 8 of 21, and so far it's quite involving, and I'm curious to see where things go!
