Yukina and Kazuya experience A Feeling! They both find this confusing.

Yukina watches people going about their lives in the capital.
Yukina: This peace they have...can we really protect it?
Kazuya: Heh. The old you would never have empathised with humans.
Yukina: I wonder if that is unbecoming of a demon chieftain...
Kazuya: If you really feel something from the bottom of your heart, there's no need to bottle it up.
She self consciously asks if he considers her his comrade and he coldly says "To the extent that you still consider me a member of the Ten Demon Alliance" and she is sad.
Yep, we are 8 chapters into a 12 chapter romance and the heroine has just realised she would like to be her love interest's friend.
Masanobu is meeting with Yachiyo and the other the masked demons, who refer to the supersoldiers as "berserkers".
Yachiyo: Why did you join house Tokugawa? You clearly have no loyalty to it.
Masanobu: It makes me privy to the interesting sight of the human creature as it truly is: motivated entirely by selfishness.
Yukina: We're being followed, let's set up an ambush.
Kazuya: You go on ahead, I'll hold them off.
Yukina: No?
Kazuya: Are you saying I can't handle it? >:(
This isn't the first time he's glossed over wanting to protect her with arrogance about his ability, it's kind of cute.
Masked demons attack! Yukina and Kazuya are doing pretty well until Horn Guy does some sort of mind-whammy with his eyes, and another demon uses this new fangled invention called gunpowder to knock Kazuya out and cause him serious injury.
Yukina: I won't forgive you!
Horn guy: My name's Shuten-doji. You're welcome to come kill me at any time...if you can.
Ok, I think I have a sense for the three masked demons now:
Yachiro: The leader. Uses invisible metal threads to slash and bind. Sadistic and mocking.
Horn Guy/Shuten-doji: Quiet, has mind powers.
The other one: Sneaky, cowardly, uses gunpowder. This is the one Kazuya met before, who claimed to be working for the Shimazu family.
They all have similar masks and identical cloaks, but wear different coloured scarves and are different heights.
Oh, apparently Shuten-doji is a mythological figure! He was a demon king who ravaged Kyoto a thousand or so years ago, and contributed to the fear and mistrust humans have towards demons. His name is forbidden amongst demons, so Yukina is deeply offended that this dude is using it.
But mainly she's just holding Kazuya's blood soaked body and freaking out. And then...Elder Tsuki appears!
He tells her Kazuya will be ok, but demands she explain what the hell she's been doing.
Oooh and he tells her that the explosives imply the involvement of the Nagumo clan. JUST AS I PREDICTED, this is the group from Shikoku whose leader didn't show up to the Ten Demon Alliance meeting, and is the clan that raised the Evil Twin from Hakuoki.
It's July 24th 1600! I'm wondering if this date is meant to make a Japanese reader go "Oooh, [big important event] is about to happen!"
Yukina watches the wounded Kazuya sleep, and thinks he looks like an innocent baby or small animal. This is the closest she's come so far to thinking he's hot.
Kazuya wakes, and even though he can barely move is determined to keep going with his mission. Yukina shouts at him to think about what he's doing to the people who worry about him, and he apologises, and lets her at least change his bandages.
It's interesting seeing the House Tokugawa symbol of three leaves again after Hakuoki, which chronicles the house's fall.
Yukina and Kazuya eavesdrop on Masanobu lying to the warlords that Ieyasu wants them to keep fighting in Aizu. And then he reveals his "berserkers", all covered in black and wearing scary masks.
Berserker: I smell demons! >:D
Kazuya: I can take them!
Yukina: No you can't D:
Yukina persuades the still injured Kazuya to flee, grabbing his hand and getting him to promise to never let go. He gets all "Leave me, I will only slow you down" but she tells him to close his eyes and deftly kills their perusers.
Her hands shake, sure he must hate her now for killing their fellow demons.
Kazuya puts his hand on hers. "I promised to never let go of this hand, so it's my duty to protect it."
Later he finds her crying, and apologises that he made her sad by needing to protect him. This is so my jam.
He stands in front of her holding out his hand.
HIS FAMILY NAME IS YUKIMURA
HE IS PART OF CHIZURU'S CLAN
Chizuru Yukimura is the main character of Hakuoki, who doesn't know she's a demon because...the rest of the Yukimura clan were all murdered for refusing to get involved in politics despite their ancient ties to House Tokugawa. I think she was the daughter of the chieftain, I am totally headcanoning her as Kazuya and Yukina's great-great-etc granddaughter now.
Kazuya: If you trust me, take my hand.
Yukina: But my hands are stained with blood.
Kazuya: They're not stained. You have nothing to be ashamed of.
She places her hand in his and they vow never to betray each other's trust.
My heart ;_; This is incredibly slow burn as a romance but is lovely as a comrades in arms war story, and I love that a female character is getting that arc.
I think Chapter 8 ended around here? I forgot to take note.
Yukina is changing Kazuya's bandages and is suddenly bashfully aware of the whole TOUCHING KAZUYA thing.
Yukina: It's fine, he's just an elder.
Kazuya, who is like 22: I'm not an elder. What are you talking about?
Yukina: JUST WONDERING HOW THINGS ARE IN THE VILLAGE
And then she finds out: Elder Tsuki comes with the news that Princess Yase's condition has worsened. He is confused and angry that Yukina hesitates to leave Kazuya.
Yukina asks Tsuki to help her become a stronger swordsman, but he refuses. And then Kazuya, who never bends to anyone, bows his head.
Kazuya: I don't care what happens to me...but her request is sincere.
And so Tsuki agrees.
Tsuki: Your technique is far better than most male demons, and you're incredibly fast. Your attacks lack weight, but a first rate teacher turns his student's weaknesses into strengths.
She asks him to teach her his Special Technique he once taught to humans, but he says she's not ready.
That night, we see Kazuya encounter Tsuki.
Tsuki: You shouldn't stay up late or it will hinder your recovery. You seem the sort not to take care of yourself.
Kazuya: My wound is almost healed, I've been keeping myself well rested. If I don't, someone makes a fuss...
Awww he thinks about the warm feeling he gets when he thinks of Yukina. He has no idea what it is, bless these two dumbasses.
Kazuya asks if he was right in noticing that Yukina carries the sword of Lady Suzuki, which is strongly linked to the two swords Kazuya carries, Daitsuren and Shotsuren.
WAIT. IS THAT CHIZURU'S SWORD??? *checks* IT IS!!! THOSE ARE THE TWO SWORDS USED BY CHIZURU AND HER EVIL TWIN!!
I AM HAVING SWORD FEELS
Man, the other routes are going to have some work competing with this connection to the original game. But I am ready to be happily surprised!
Tsuki: Fate is a mysterious thing. Perhaps it was destiny that you and the young lady would come together.
Kazuya: *confused but intense happy feelings*
Tsuki: And so, perhaps I should not say this but...would you stay away from her?
Kazuya: *confused but intense sad feelings*
Tsuki: I once taught my technique to some humans I believed would use it justly. And every one of them became corrupted by power. After that, I ceased to have anything to do with humans. If the young lady is with you, she will come into contact with humans, and be betrayed by them. I do not wish to see that happen.
Kazuya thinks about how, while he trusts Ieyasu, he has no faith in the rest of house Tokugawa not to hurt Yukina. And he doesn't want to see that happen either.
Ieyasu refuses to help Masonobu with the war now that he's using beserkers. Masonobu makes very thinly veiled threats to (a) kill Ieyasu and (b) send the berserkers out to cause havok, and Ieyasu angrily relents.
Yukina feels that Kazuya has gotten distant. They visit Ieysau, who is dispiritedly making false promises of free land to various warlords. He says he has so little control over the war that his best option is to finish it as quickly as possible: with the beserkers.
Yukina angrily shouts that Ieyasu has betrayed the faith put in him by Kazuya and everyone else. Kazuya tells her she doesn't understand everything Ieyasu's dealing with, and apologises on her behalf. Hmmph!
She apologises to Kazuya later, but he obviously appreciates that she went to bat for him, and affectionately calls her a kindhearted fool.
Later Ieyasu tells Kazuya that Yukina helped change his mind, and says Kazuya should stay close to her. "It's not easy to find someone who will always tell you what they really think."
Masonobu talks to the masked demons and the text just started calling the third one "Shu"
with no explanation. Ok, Shu it is. Ah, and the reason the demons are working with Masonobu is the promise of land. Clearly they didn't hear Masonobu and Ieyasu discuss how everyone knows land promised in war is a lie...

Date: 2019-07-01 01:13 pm (UTC)1. Among all the feels this is hitting me with, I'm now much more conflicted about Chizuru's choice to not care very much about rebuilding her clan, now that I know something about the Yukimura clan's history and traditions.
2. So apparently in the Saito route Chizuru is dating a guy who looks like he comes from her clan. Hunh. There is a super-long fanfic out there with the premise that Saito is secretly a demon, I'm now kind of into that.
3. Chizuru needs to learn how to dual-wield. I mean it's her clan tradition and she would look awesome at it.
