I slept on it and took the sensible option. You better not turn out to be secretly creepy, Kazuya...

So far it's pretty slow burn with lots of politics, but it is a Hakuoki prequel, and I'm having fun.

*actively avoids calculating how much $5 US is in Australian dollars*

Demons are stronger than humans and so are seen as monsters, to stay safe they live in scattered secret villages. But today, the ten chieftains of the Ten Demon Alliance have been summoned to Yase village!

The Yase clan is the oldest and most central demon clan (GO YASE) Princess Yase has inherited their power of psychic dreams.

...oh no I am going to ship them aren't I? Oh well.

We meet one of the oldest members of the Ten Demon Alliance: Elder Koto/Koutaro the Elder, who is an Adorable Old Man. Aw, he basically raised Yukina. So I guess he's going to die and/or turn out to be evil!

He's only a hundred and looks that old? I do not understand how demon ageing works at all.

Aw, Koto gave Yukina his hawk Gin-o as a child because "she looked like she needed a friend". So Gin-o pecks Chitose when he insults Koto :D

The humans are restless. Troops are gathering in Osaka! *only knows Osaka as "the touristy city that gets dubbed as Southern", has no idea what this implies*

So! Yukina was raised by three dads elders:
Koutaro the Elder/Elder Koto, who taught her to communicate with Gin-o.
Tsukishima the Elder/Elder Tsuki, who looks like a middle aged Ghibli character and taught her fighting.
Shiomi the Elder/Elder Shio, who is another adorable old man and taught her medicinal plants.

Elder Tsuki trained Kazuya, too. Oh he is SO dead and/or evil.

Kazutake heard what Chitose and Kazuya did to Yukina and hits them both on the head for drawing a weapon on a fellow demon. He's described as being in his late twenties, and Chitose clearly wants to avoid him. His clan are nomadic. Game, "gypsies" is a slur, and an anachronistic one at that, though I absolutely wouldn't put it past the Japanese writers to have used it anyway.

I get to choose to say Yukina also deserves a hit on the head :D "I gave up my womanhood ten years ago, when I took over as clan leader. And my clan mostly consists of females, so you if you hold back you insult my whole clan.". Hee. And so she's 17.

He points out that she was just defending herself. Fair.

Ok, it turns out the last meeting between the chieftains was more than ten years ago, so Yukina was too young to attend, but Chitose and Kazuya came as the then sons of chieftains. How old are they then?

Shin sharply mocks Yukina's ignorance in a soft tone. She is VERY ignorant about broader demon society, bad job at teaching her, dads.

Kazutake is very humble in the face of everyone saying he's awesome and will take over the Alliance when the current elders die. He points out that Shin is the same age and Shin just laughs.

We finally meet Princess Kazuha Yase! She scolds Yukina for being dressed like a boy, which is not inclining me to ship them but does make me lean further to reading Yukina as transmasc (yes, I know she's just performing masculinity in order to be taken seriously in a sexist society, shh)

The prettily dressed Princess Kazuha smiles as she puts a golden decoration on the pinned hair of Yukina, who we can't really see. Kazuha says I used to wear this hair ornament back when I was around your age. I'mn giving it to you.
...ok Yukina being ordered to kneel while Kazuha affectionately makes her pretty, speaking softly as she combs Yukina's hair is...not unshippy. She seems to be a bit older than Yukina but so does everyone.

Kazuha: It is possible to be both a girl and leader, you know. Perhaps you will even be the wife of one of the chieftains gathered here today.
Yukina: Me, a wife? What would happen to the Suzumori Clan? I'm too young and inexperienced to worry about that sort of thing right now.
Kazuha: Because you are inexperienced, you will be able to learn from the man you marry, and grow together with him.

Ehhhhh :/

"Having her comb my hair feels really nice. When I am with her I feel very comfortable...and I wish that maybe the Princess feels the same way too."

*waggles eyebrows* You know, Princess, you are ALSO an older chieftain who could teach Yukina a thing or two...

Kazuha: You look so pretty...Treasure this hair ornament as if it were me. I would like to be by your side until you marry, but...

Yukina gets a bad feeling and so do I :( (Especially since I saw a thing on the wiki)

The demon chieftain from Shikoku is late, and people wonder if he got caught up in the growing human conflict. Elder Tsuki is against Yukina learning about the affairs of the human world, but is persuaded that she should know. As much as I think it sucks that they kept her ignorant, it does give the game an excuse to explain all the historical context.

So. Oda Nobunaga was a warlord who semi-unified Japan. He's also the focus of a lot of anime/dating sims etc in his own right, so I've vaguely heard of him.

After Nobunaga's death, his vassal Hideyoshi Toyotomi took power from the weakened Oda family. And now that he's dead, everyone is looking to wrest power from his family, since his son is only eight. Including Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose name I actually kinda recognise! Spoilers: He's going to create the Tokugawa Shogunate that rules Japan until the events of Hakuoki a little under 300 years later.

Also Hideyoshi Toyotomi was a commoner yet created the rule that only samurai could bear arms, and invaded Korea. So I'm not his biggest fan, despite the game seeming to think he was cool.

Anyway. From all this, I think the date is January 1600.

The demons all agree that humans are gross and untrustworthy. Kazuya seems actively upset to hear that Tokugawa Ieyasu is expected to betray his former master and try to seize power, does Kazuya know him?

The princess calls everyone together to ask if anyone has gotten involved in human politics, and offer a stern warning to cut any such ties if they exist.

All the chieftains deny any such ties and clearly think this meeting was a waste of time. But they stay for the night since it's gotten late.

The Princess looks unwell, so Yukina checks on her, and asks if her question was based on a psychic dream. The Princess says she's fine, but that she dreamed one of the chieftains would soon get caught up in a human war and die, fighting against...and then she changes the subject.

She also asks Yukina to help bring "a visitor" to her in secret tomorrow. HMM.

Chitose has a low alcohol tolerance for a demon, eg he is able to get drunk at all. Also he's from Satsuma province which rings a vague bell.

Why are you giving me a Chitose choice, game, I paid $5US to be on the Kazuya path. And now the chance to talk to Kazutake...is this all still some common route you were too cheap to let me play for free?

Yukino goes to find Gin-o. He's bratty with her but calmly obeys Kazuya.
Kazuya smiles gently at a white hark on his wrist as he scratches it's chin. The text says Surprised, I stare at Gin-o as he sits on Kazuya's arm.
Kazuya claims to have never owned a hawk. Looking peaceful and nostalgic he says "I just know a man who loves hawks more than anything else." But then he is reminded of Yukina's presence and gets more guarded.

End of Chapter 1!

There are 12 chapters and three endings.

Gin-o warns of trouble!
A cloaked and hooded figure in a silver mask covering the top of his face holds a collapsed Princess and says Ahah...you must be the Princess' loyal guard. Come to save her, I presume?
!!

"The bandit" says the princess is like a living mummy. Also, under his mask I can see a scar on one cheek and the hint of silver hair over the other. And he has some sort of invisible force field! Ah, but only on his clothes! So Yukina slices at his exposed hand :D

...which heals instantly, proving he's a demon. And then he psychically takes control of her sword, and cuts her with some invisible weapon.

Bad guy: Ooh, I wonder how that happened >:D

Chitose appears, and turns out to have a magic firey sword that he rarely unsheathes since it's so deadly. He has trouble against all the magic too but I think he just set some invisible swordsman on fire? When Elder Tsuki arrives as well the bad guy just laughs and runs away.

Yukina has never seen anyone who wasn't super old be sick before so the princess being unconscious freaks her out. And she wonders if the Princess knew what was going to happen, and sent Yukina to wait for a "visitor" to keep her safe.

And then a stranger is caught at the gate: Senkimaru! Who is described as a "young boy". He's very pissy at being treated like a prisoner, and says he's here at the Princess's invitation, and has a letter to prove it. So she was expecting a visitor after all!

He says his name is Senkimaru Hatsushimo. Elder Shio says "Clan Hatsushimo? Of the former 12 demon alliance??". So who was the other clan that got kicked out? I bet they're the bad guys. It all happened 900 years ago, I have no idea if anything important was happening in 6th century Japan that would be relevant.

I love how tiny this dude is. Chitose isn't even one of the taller love interests! Though I hope Senkimaru's just naturally short and androgynous and not actually super young.

Chitose suspects Senkimaru of being in league with the bad guy but Shin is just as suspicious of Kazuya and Kazutake, who have gone missing.

They send out Gin-o and...magic paper sparrows?? There wasn't anywhere near this amount of magic in Hakuoki, did demons just forget how to do it? But I guess "Magic existed in the early 17th century then was mostly gone by the late 19th" is an established fantasy trope.

Kazuya was spotted near Fushimi, which is the site of a big temple that Hakuoki loved setting confrontations in front of because the red gates look dramatic.

Kazutake is near Sawayama/Lake Biwa, which I know nothing about. But also, who cares, I'm going to where Kazuya is.

Shin: I hate humans, and I hate gods...and the idea of being worshipped like that disgusts me.

Hee, I love atheist gods.

He says he wants to teach "the humility and modesty any female demon should possess" and Yukina just thinks "Oh, could I be more like Princess Yase?"

I know you're from the 17th century but COME ON YUKINA.

They arrive at Fushimi Castle, which rings a vague bell but the only familiar thing on wikipedia is that Sakamoto (a Hakuoki LI) died at a local inn, aw. That said, the castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, whose death set off the plot of this game, so that may become relevant.

Yukina has never seen so many people before. Using her ninja skills, she sneaks in to the mansion Gin-o leads her towards, and finds Kazuya talking to a middle aged man.

Kazuya: The Ieyasu Tokugawa I know isn't the sort of human who would do something like that!
Ieyasu: The opportunity to rule over the land is within my grasp. Why wouldn't I take it?
Kazuya: You're supposed to be different to the other warlords. Did you not promise to Hideyoshi?

Aw, Kazuya, that's adorable. Yukina is shocked that Kazuya would break the Demon Commandment not to get involved with human affairs, while Ieyasu says this sort of attitude is why demons get used and stolen as hostages.

As Yukina's sneaking away to tell the others, she's stopped by Kazuya. She explains about the Princess, and I have the option to tell him what she heard. Let's lean right into earnestly trusting honesty, that seems to be his jam.

Kazuya: That has nothing to do with you.
Yukina: Yes it does. You heard what the Princess said last night. As a fellow member of the Ten Demon Alliance I cannot let you get away with breaking the Demon Commandments.
Kazuya: >:(
Bad guy: Hello >:D

Yukina's mind goes blank with fury. When she tells Kazuya who the man is, he draws his own swords.

Bad guy: If you demons just stay hidden away in the mountains, trembling alone, I'll leave you alone. But if you show yourselves in human settlements like this...well, I just don't know what I'll do.

And then he FLOATS INTO THE SKY. Who IS this dude??

HMMM. And now I have to decide whether to tell Elder Shio about what Yukina heard Kazuya doing. Let's...not.

Kazuya looks at her in surprise, then tells the others he just came to town to send a letter home. Later he finds Yukina alone and firmly tells her to keep the secret. You could stand to be nicer about it, dude, she just did you a big favour.

Back at the village, it comes out that Kazutake is working as a guard for the human Mitsunari Ishida. Who was *googles* a military commander who died in...November 1600. Ouch. Kazutake refuses to explain his reasons, but says it's ok since the guy worked for the old government and is now retired.

Shin persuades everyone that Kazutake should be allowed an exemption for being awesome.

We see Ieyasu calming himself by playing Go. An evil vizier-y little old man called Masanobu Honda comes in. He seems cheerful at the thought of crushing any hint of opposition, and then tells Ieyasu not to get involved with "the rat that snuck in today". Also some Valuable Thing is in Osaka Castle, maybe like...a hostage Kazuya cares about? I'm going to guess little sister.

Ieyasu remembers his conversation with Kazuya and mutters to himself "I did make a promise. But humans change..."

End of Chapter 2!

I think there is a common route, I'm recognizing a lot of this.

"Having her comb my hair feels really nice. When I am with her I feel very comfortable...and I wish that maybe the Princess feels the same way too."

Yeah I was shipping it pretty hard too.

And my clan mostly consists of females, so you if you hold back you insult my whole clan

I thought this was so interesting! So the scarcity of female demons in Hakuoki times must be because something happened to the female-dominated clans? Or maybe they went into hiding? Or maybe they just intermarried more with humans so they don't have pure enough lineage for Kazama?

Also interesting to think about how gender identity works when it overlaps with clan identity.

Not Happy with the way the Elders kept so much information from Yukina, although I suppose you are right that it allows for more exposition.

why doesn't Sen have a bunch of eligible cousins etc?

Yes, exactly!

But it does help explain why Sen has a female bodyguard, since it seems that in female-dominated clans women are perfectly competent fighters.

I hadn't even thought about the biology, I'm still puzzling how it is supposed to work socially - like, when a woman from a woman-dominated clan marries a man from a man-dominated clan where do they live? Or do they live separately and each raise their same-gender children? Or do they mostly just marry humans? (Probably not, with all the talk about how awful humans are, but you never know.) Or is it just the norm in demon culture for men to marry men and women to marry women, outside of rare cases?

Well, we'll talk more about that once you've finished a route. It's probably not a spoiler to say that I don't feel like these questions have yet been adequately answered, but at least we get more material.

Hunh, I did not know that! Any recommendations?

I just finished up to chapter 4 of Kazuya route, so a few more comments now that I've caught up.

I hate humans, and I hate gods...and the idea of being worshipped like that disgusts me.

That was so interesting, and not on the Chitose route. It seems that Shin's tribe was treated pretty well but he's still angry about it. As it makes sense to be angry about pedestalization. This makes me curious about him.

I also found it interesting that he thinks he knows enough about femininity to teach it. That could just be his arrogance, or there could be something interesting going on with his gender also.

There wasn't anywhere near this amount of magic in Hakuoki, did demons just forget how to do it?

Yes, that is very interesting. Hakuoki-era demons seem to be in much worse shape in a bunch of ways. I'm wondering if we'll get some of the story of how that happened.

So far I'm liking Kazuya a lot, he's a lot like Saito but less damaged and brutal.
