I have somehow ended up pursuing the tsundere Yamato. Who is pretty cute under the eternal grumpiness!
I added the character names to the Masterlist post for anyone who forgets them (...like...me...)
After several days of training, everyone but Beniyuri can summon thought weapons at will. She feels super guilty about slowing everyone down.
Karasuba: Why doesn't everyone else go fight the monsters, and I stay here and protect her? ;)
Hikage: No. Everyone needs to be able to defend themselves.
Yamato, who was the second slowest to learn to make a gun, finds Beniyuri practising alone at night.
Yamato: I can see your fear. You're afraid of me, aren't you?
Beniyuri thinks about all the terrifying things she's faced recently, and how un-scary Yamato is by comparison: she knows he would never deliberately do her harm. What really scares her is the thought of losing people.
Beniyuri: I'm afraid for you. You're so determined to escape you don't think of your own safety.
Yamato: ...get in position.
Beniyuri: ??

He's all business but she is VERY aware of being basically hugged by a BOY.
He asks her to describe the gun: colour, texture, weight. It starts to form in her mind. But then she remembers the death knell of the monsters she killed.
Beniyuri: I can't do it!
Yamato: Yes you can. It's not the gun you're afraid of...it's losing your friends, right? So use it to protect them. Protect the things that are important to you.
This sort of sentiment bothers me in dude focussed media from the US, but I am 100% here for nice Japanese girls using magic guns to protect their men.
And the gun finally appears. It's beautiful, sparkling with silver light and decorated with an ivy pattern. She'd been thinking of it as scary, but now it feels reliable, and precious.
She squees thankfully at Yamato, who is tsunder-ily charmed, but then their eyes meet and they realise how close together they are and both apologise and back away, blushing. ADORABLE.
Aww and then he says Hikage trained him the same way. Exactly the same way? ;) Yamato thinks Hikage is super cool and wishes he could be so calm. *ships it a little*
OOH I GET TO CHOOSE WHO TO GO MONSTER HUNTING WITH????

I like everyone but Karasuba, though!
(Also, I don't care that it's benevolent sexism combined with Otome Logic, I love how they all just let her decide on everything, even when I as the player don't get to have any say)
Hikage kinda hits that Saito shaped button in my heart but it feels boring to pick the Default Dude. And I want to wait and see how creepy Kagiha gets. So, let's keep up the Yamato momentum!
He says she's weird to pick someone unfriendly like him, then tells her not to slow him down. YOU'RE CHARMED THOUGH, YAMATO, I CAN TELL.
They walk through a CREEPY ASS hallway lined with animal masks.
She asks what he saw in his photo but he clearly doesn't want to say, so instead she rambles about her family and how they adopted an abandoned dog who was snappish at first, but warmed up after they kept showing their affection, and protected Beniyuri. She compares Yamato to the dog and he is not pleased haha.
Suddenly: a scream! A boy in a cat mask is being attacked and cries out "Help me, [big brother]" (They translate it as 'Mister' but I suspect the literal translation may be relevant) before being slashed and vanishing in smoke.
Yamato: I failed again D: HELP ME KILL THIS THING, BENIYURI
And she does! <3
Back at base, everyone combines the shards they found to create a new mandala pattern. A white butterfly flies to the door and lands on the hand of...the rabbit-masked little girl servant Usagi, who's arrived with their reward: a traditional Japanese meal.
At first she says eating with them would be inappropriate, but Beniyuri cajoles her into eating some sliced apples, and she lifts up her mask to reveal her face. Well, there goes my "the masks are their real faces" theory haha.
End of Chapter 2!
The flowchart shows that the story splits into branches based on who I chose to go monster hunting with, then narrows back to a single path with the next scene.
And I can do the minigame with Yamato! SORRY YAMATO, I DON'T SPEAK JAPANESE, I'M SURE WHATEVER YOU SAID ABOUT ME GETTING A C WAS VERY CUTTING. And now I've gone from Level 2 to Level 3 with him and Hikage, so it looks like I don't have to level the characters separately. Phew!
And now I have to clear 6 short episodes to continue. That Yamato scene is unlocked now, let's start with that.
Oooh, "About Brothers"!
Beniyuri and Yamato have a late night chat, she's a little nervous of annoying him at first but talks about being a big sister, and says he seems like the older brother type. But he can't remember his family.
I hate the rain:
Yamato angsts in his room, and Beniyuri worries he might be sick. At first he's all "BACK OFF I'M FINE", but he immediately apologises for taking his irritation out on her: it's just that he hates the sound of water, so having it rain every night is unpleasant.
Beniyuri: We should search the manor for a record player to drown out the noise!
Yamato: Don't go to so much trouble. Although...I like hearing your voice, if you sat closer...*pats bed next to him*
Beniyuri, blushing: UH
Yamato, also blushing: I DIDN'T MEAN IT LIKE THAT STOP THINKING WEIRD THINGS
Favourite food:
Beniyuri: What would you like to eat?
Yamato: STEAK :D
Beniyuri: We don't have the ingredients...
Yamato: I'LL HUNT DOWN A COW. Or...ginger pork is also good >.>
Beniyuri: Ooh, we do have frozen pork.
SEE. SHE DOES KNOW WHAT GINGER IS.
Hikage asks what her favourite food is and when she says "clafoutis" (french baked custard with fruit) he and Yamato are all "If that's English I've never heard it before...is it an evil incantation??"
Beniyuri: Oh, you don't know about clafoutis?
Hikage and Yamato: HAHA OF COURSE IT IS A DELICIOUS...UH...FRUIT
Beniyuri: You know, there's lots of things you two know that I don't, there's no shame in not knowing something. But there is in pretending you do.
Yamato: ...savage D:
And then the three of them make dinner together, and the dudes are actually better at cooking, but she doesn't mind.
(That was more of a Yamato & Hikage scene, game, but never mind)
And now a general scene to round out the six.
Hideout Exploration:
Everyone thoroughly searches for clues. Karasuba gets distracted by a copy of the classic literature "Setting Sun" by Osamu Dazai, which amuses me since Pia has been filling my dash with images of the Osamu Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs. ANYWAY. He has a sense he's read it before many times. He also finds a cute stuffed bear/raccoon dog thing.
Beniyuri and Karasuba: His name is Ponta! :D
Yamato: And he uses his tail as a weapon!
Kagiha: I've never seen him before, but he's cute. Gonta, you say?
Hikage: It's creepy D:
