Reactions to Miss Fisher Season 3 eps 1-3
May. 27th, 2015 12:17 amSpoilersssssss
Ep 1:
Has Phryne ever talked about her parents before? Meanwhile they cheerfully reminisce about her childhood and her sad dead sister from season 1 is not mentioned once.
Oh look a dead lesbian.
EVIL TWIN.
Ep 2:
Oh look a dead gay guy.
Did they not have search warrants in 1920s Australia? I feel like police officers shouldn't be able to use evidence they found by randomly rummaging around in army bases without permission.
NOW KISS
NO NOT THAT GUY
I feel like we already did the "Hugh comes to terms with Dot's career" thing but I guess he has more coming to terms to do.
Not a dead gay guy after all!
Ep 3:
An old italian woman being murdered to loud opera, really? And of course her rosary drops to the ground dramatically. AND THEN PASTA SAUCE DRIPS TO THE GROUND SYMBOLICALLY OMG.
Now that this show is internationally popular people all over the world can see how weird Australians are about non-WASPs hooray
I guess it's been a while since Phryne had a sexy Ethnic Boyfriend. Can't speak much for the sexiness of this one though, Jack's Sexy Ethnic Girlfriend is hotter.
That's a nice jacket, Phyryne.
EVIL SECRET SOCIETY OF TOMATO IMPORTERS
Claremont last ep, Fremantle this one, the Perth references just keep coming! (this is exciting when you're from Perth)
At least this victim's secret love life was 100% unambiguously heterosexual this time? As was everyone else of course, can't have secret gays AND Italians, only so much room for diversity.
I like how Phryne gets all the sex and Jack gets a fairly chaste, sentimental kiss that largely exists to prove his devotion to Phryne. WHO. HE. SHOULD. ALSO. KISS.
Looks like next week is a crazy disabled person with facial scars SOUNDS FUN.

Date: 2015-05-26 11:59 pm (UTC)As for episode one, I can't tell you how hard I was praying that it wouldn't be a recapitulation of "jealous spurned lesbian commits murder"... which as I recall was actually used in a previous season.

Date: 2015-05-29 05:42 am (UTC)I think it's that people are used to "racist media" hitting certain specific buttons, and since MFMM hits different buttons they don't always notice.
But yeah. I watched season one with a friend from Argentina and it was sometimes VERY AWKWARD. Though we did have an interesting conversation about the ways in which her ethnicity is exotified here vs in the US, when in her own country she is part of the privileged white majority.

I have MANY feelings about MFMM right now, including a feeling that there is a statistically improbable number of women committing violent crimes. Which goes back to the source material and its general hostility to women who aren't Phryne or Dot, I guess. I'm suddenly really sad I'm not on the panel about it at Continuum next weekend.
