Legend of Korra begins again!
Sep. 14th, 2013 06:19 pmI think my main problem was residual lack of trust from last season, so I'm inclined to assume every thread will be resolved in ways I don't like.
Other than that: I thought it was ok, and am moderately intrigued, but a few things bugged me.
Specifically: too much focus on men! (I could see that coming from the preview materials but it was still annoying)
Also: there is a character called Varrick. Am thus amusing myself imagining him meeting the Dragon Age character Varric.
WHERE ARE THE FEMALE MENTORS AVATAR(*)?? (this was an issue with ATLA too) I like Kya but hope she gets to do more than be Tenzin's snarky older sister (not that I don't enjoy that) And while one assumes Desna and Eska didn't bud from Unalaq like little emotionless clones there's no evidence to the contrary.
LoK continues it's ability to make 50+ year old animated women hot. *ships Kya/Lin* Sure, we've never seen them on screen together, but they must have known each other growing up. And just imagine how much it would annnoy Tenzin!
I like Korra's cousins and find the Eska/Bolin dynamic amusingly terrible but am wondering where things are going. If he dumps Eska for the more feminine, pretty, and friendly Asami I will be annoyed (on a meta level, not at Bolin. I'd prefer to date Asami too!), especially since Asami can do way better. Let's assume Bolin will eventually realise that Eska was only dating him as a favour to Desna (who he canonicaly finds attractive!), and the two boys will realise their true love and live happily ever after. Meanwhile Eska will help Korra save the world along with Jinora, Asami and Kya. And, hell, Pema too, she also needs more to do than being defined in terms of her relationship to Important Men.
Speaking of shipping I did not hate the Mako/Korra scenes, as long as this isn't leading to her realising what a ~terrible girlfriend~ she is while Mako is all self righteous. I mean, she does have room for improvement girlfriendwise, but I am very sick of flawed female characters being overly punished for not being nice enough to their poor woobie boyfriends.
I am glad to see I'm not the only person who saw Thor/Loki similarities, though I imagine the plot will differ more now that Unalaq has shown his hand. Glad they didn't drag that out, he was shouting "I AM UP TO SOMETHING" even harder than Tarlok did. Is he going to be the Big Bad I wonder? The shot of the warships entering the icy harbour was very ATLA-era Fire Nation. (Speaking of which, are we going to get a look at what's going on over there at some point?) Am very curious to see where things go in episode 3. Anyway, I think the Nothern/Southern Water Tribe dynamics make a moderate amount of sense given their history but am still a bit sick of everything revolving around characters who were born special. I'm just waiting for Mako and Bolin to turn out to be Zuko's illegitimate grandchildren.
(*)I know Katara is one in theory, but we don't see much of her actually teaching.

Date: 2013-09-14 02:35 pm (UTC)The whole episode was really dedicated to insulating the female characters from each other. Not to be overly Bechdel Testy, but there were 8 female characters with speaking roles, and Jinora and Ikki were the only ones who ever spoke to each other. Which really is kind of weird. Korra and Eska could at least have interracted in some humorous Korra-is-weirded-out-by-her-creepy-cousins way.
