Dragon Age "voice" meme
Dec. 7th, 2011 02:14 pmI don't like making voice posts, but I did a video yesterday and really enjoyed it, so thought I'd try doing this meme as a video. And then the audio got out of sync, so this is only the first part.
Lj users: the second version of this post is refusing to crosspost, but you can find it on my dreamwidth.
The problem with video posts is you can't really edit them, in retrospect I don't entirely stand by everything I say in this and there's other stuff I would add.
Hi. So there's this Dragon Age voice post going around, but I don't like voice posts, I find them hard to understand, my brain has trouble processing audio without visuals. So I thought ok, I'll do a video post. I did one yesterday, it was a lot of fun.
1: What is your name and username? My name is Sophie alias sqbr or "square bear", and my username is sqbr or alias_sqbr depending on various things.
2: Where are you from? Perth Western Australia, I was born here and have lived here my whole life.
3: Which Dragon Age game is your favorite and why? These questions ask you your favourite thing. I don't like that sort of question, I can never decide what my favourite is, I get all "Do I like this one more than that one?" and I start thinking about an objective metric to judge everything by. So I'm not going to do favourites, I'm just going to make up my own questions that I like more.
So: how do I feel about the different Dragon Age games? You've got Origins, Awakenings, and Dragon Age 2. Awakenings is not my favourite, but it's not really a full game. I can't say whether I like Dragon Age 2 or Origins more. I've played DA2 more, but I think I was only able to enjoy DA2 because of the really intense worldbuilding of Origins.
So I can't answer that question. There you go: question 3, already can't answer it properly.
4: Who is your favorite Dragon Age character and why? I don't have a favourite. I think the Dragon Age character I love the most is Morrigan. I really like her a lot, she's great. The moment she turned up on screen I was like "Wait, so, you can romance the women in this game right?" and then I found out she was straight. And then I went and watched a whole bunch of Farscape, and I had to stop myself just fast forwarding to the Aeryn scenes. So I really like Morrigan, but I don't know that my reasons for liking her are really rational and objective.
She is a well written character though, she has a really nice arc. She starts off all morally ambiguous and kind of mean. And then she kind of warms up to you over time if you're…not nice to her exactly, but you become her friend. She doesn't like it when you're just nice to her. I like the dynamic because pretty much everyone else reacts best if you're nice to them, but she's a little bit more complicated than that, and she doesn't devote herself to you the way that Fenris or pretty much any other character does, when they're all "Oh you're the centre of my universe", she's like "I really like you, but I have my own stuff to do" and then she goes off and does it.
But really all the characters are great. Well, most of the characters are great. I like a lot of the characters, but let's say Morrigan.
5: What is your favorite Dragon Age pairing? That depends, do you mean the one I enjoy the most in the game, the one that I enjoy writing the most, or the one that I enjoy reading the most in fanfic and stuff?
The one that I enjoy playing the most was probably Alistair and my Brosca, my first Warden, because that was my first time playing any of these Bioware games. I had no idea how involving they would be. I really liked the dynamic, and then he died at the end, it was all very sad (and then I played it again so he wasn't dead) I've written a moderate amount of that, and I seek it out because nobody else writes it. And when they do she often dies at the end, which is like…Noooo!
I really like Fenris and Isabela as a pairing. Because all these stories revolev around the Warden or Hawke a lot, and it's nice that there's this side relationship going on, and I can see the two of them being good for each other. I've written a moderate amount of that. I like the way it
s written. People don't write it quite the way I imagine it, or the way I write it- which are again two different things. I only really have a certain number of kinds of stories that I'm able to write in a way that I find interesting, which isn't necessarily the way I think things would actually go.
So that's an example of some pairings I like.
6: How about your favorite DA crack pairing? That would be Morrigan and Leliana, because I've written a moderate amount of that and I think they'd be good together in a funny sort of way.
I like people who are really different to each other and don't really get along, and then find out that underneath that they're really similar. I'm not saying that's actually the best way to form a relationship. I find it annoying when people say "People who do that obviously don't understand relationships" No, no, I understand relationships. It's just…relationships between two people who are really similar and get along really well from the moment they meet, they're great! I'm in a relationship like that! They're not very much fun to write. To me.
I've never actually written it, or seen it anywhere apart from people occasionally mentioning it as an idea. But I really like the idea of Merrill and Sigrun because they're both adorable.
