I keep seeing conversations where people ask for recs for decent f/f romance stories, and I thought it would be useful to have a post I could link to rather than trying to remember them all every time. This is very much informed by my taste, recs in the comments are definitely welcomed.

So, my criteria: main characters are canonically in a f/f relationship which is still together at the the end of the story, and there's a moderately happy ending. The central arc doesn't have to be about the relationship though.

Apart from webcomics and scanlations etc, links are mainly to rec posts I've already written since that's easier. I'm not including femslash fanfic, but here's my bookmarks.

Books:

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters: a pastiche of 19th century melodrama novels but with lesbian romance and clever little self aware references. Tipping the Velvet didn't entirely work for me but others like it.

Ash by Malinda Lo: I mainly rec this because lesbian fantasy romance is so hard to find, it's enjoyable but flawed.

Fire Logic by Laurie Marks: Good light fantasy in a world without sexism or homophobia. Starts a bit angsty and dry but picks up.

Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey: post apocalyptic YA, eg my least favourite genre, and I still mostly liked it :)

The Mask of the Highwaywoman by Niamh Murphy: this is kind of mediocre, but if you're in the mood for light cheesy ff regency romance it's not too bad.

Manga:
I avoid anything by men or containing underage sex, which is a lot of it :/ Still, these are all very sweet. Here's my slightly more current yuri recs.

Girlfriends by Milk Morinaga: A little fanservicey but still good.

Strawberry Sweet Shake by Hayashiya Shizuru.

Various one shots by Morishima Akiko: lots of adult women who identify as lesbians rather than just confused schoolgirls.

Other Graphic Novels:

Dykes to watch out for (I think the main character may be single at the end, but it's a soap opera FULL of f/f couples)

Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore: I must admit I got bored of this before the end but for a while I was madly in love with it, and the end is apparently good. Author is a man and can be a little Joss Whedony.

Runaways (Brian K Vaughn run): Not the main characters but fairly central members of the ensemble.

Webcomics:

Yu+Me: I have mixed feelings about this comic, especially how it handles race. But long spec fic f/f romance is hard to find!

Movies:

Imagine Me and You

Saving face

D.E.B.S: silly super-villain/spy lesbian romance-action-comedy

Show Me Love/Fucking Amal: Cute highschool romance.

TV Shows:

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Very strange and sometimes disturbing deconstruction of shouju anime tropes. Not to everyone's tastes but I love it. Ending is ambiguous, though.

The Legend of Korra: The f/f ship only really kicks in in book 4, but it's overall a pretty entertaining fantasy show.

Lost Girl: I got bored of this show before the f/f ship really got started but it's a fun speculative show with a bisexual female main character.

Video games:

Magical Diary: Like Harry Potter with more queerness and romance :D

All of Bioware's Dragon Age games have fairly satisfying f/f romance options, though they only have happy endings if you play them right :) Enjoyable if slightly grimdark medieval fantasy RPGs. Mass Effect 1 and 3 have them too, but it's a more heteronormative series.

Works about lesbian and bisexual women which don't fit my criteria but I still feel like mentioning:

Batwoman Elegy (graphic novel)

Hourou Musuko: a very sweet slice of life manga and anime about a young trans girl (who I think would identify as bisexual) and her friends.

I feel like I must have done one of these posts before, but if I have I can't find it. And I know I've forgotten stuff. I'm probably going to be slow to update this so check the comments.

Book: Gossamer Axe by Gael Baudino.

Celtic lesbians fight the fae with an all-girl metal band. IT IS EXACTLY AS AWESOME AS YOU THINK. (I can get it back from [personal profile] elaran and lend it to you, if you like. It's pretty difficult to get a hold of. I had to go to Thailand to find it!)

I just got done reading the entire run so far of Dicebox, and while I wouldn't call it "romance" necessarily, it's definitely about a very important relationship between two women. And there's lots of lesbian sex and it's long-form SF and the art is beautiful and I can rec it unreservedly now there's more than ten pages of it, which is where it was the first time I tried to read it and I got really confused. This is one that rewards sticktoitiveness.

That's been on my to-check-out list for a while, I'll make a point to check it out when I'm feeling up to giving it a proper go.
