Hate and Pity
Wordcount: 2252
Rating: PGish
Characters/Pairing: Equius/Aradia
Contains: The sorts of consent/violence etc issues you'd expect, though no worse than canon (or, for that matter, Kim Possible)
Summary: Death has a way of changing your perspective. Aradia character study.

Yes, I know, my first Homestuck fanfic (not counting a crappy little thing I am forgetting about) and it's Equius/Aradia, wtf self. Then again, I think Equius and dead!Aradia are the two characters I'm most inclined to think of as being way older than their canonical ages, which helps get past my "romance/sexiness between young people" squick, not that this story is very romantic or sexy.

Since I only really got into fic writing two years ago I'm still finding things out about myself as a writer. Recently I've been pondering the repeated motifs/cliches I fall into and this fic hits a bunch.

First off is the slightly bittersweet "She(*) wasn't sure what the future held, and odds were things could get pretty bad, but she still felt cautiously optimistic" ending. Even having noticed the pattern I find that's just how the stories want to end, though I'm going to try and find ways to make them less samey.

Second is, somewhat disturbingly, interspecies(**) het where one of the pair has been dead or possessed. Not counting some drabbles I did for a challenge, I have eight het stories which fit that description and two which don't but still have some similarities (does Prince Charming from Enchanted count as a different species? :)). My femslash, on the other hand, is all about human women who have never died or been possessed (well, Amy Pond has but I never mentioned it). My gen, poly fic and m/m is a mix of things, but there's definitely a moderate amount of relationships between people from different species and possession etc. It's a little…odd.

I partly blame Bioware and their obsessions with death and sexy non-humans. For example, afaict one of the male love interests in Dragon Age 2 has been possessed by a non-human spirit that previously inhabited a corpse while the other is an elf. Which I suppose bodes well for me writing fic about them :D

(*)Or, occasionally, he. Have yet to write a ze, but I'm sure when I do they'll be cautiously optimistic too :)
(**)As in alien/human, dwarf/human or, in this case, alien/robot-ghost-frog-alien. Nothing furry, that would be weird.
