Mum won tickets to the Black Swan(*) Theatre Company version of "Twelfth night" and took me along and I just came back and it was awesome. I'm all bouncy and awake, thus this review.

Twelfth Night has always been my favourite Shakespeare play. It's funny how many things I loved when younger I look back on and go "Oh, hey, lesbian subtext!" (And in this case, crossdressing and other exploration of gender roles too) Which they played up deliberately ^_^ *ships Olivia/Viola and Sebastian/Antonio. Or possibly Olivia/Viola/Orsino, though the play seemed to be going for Sebastian/Olivia/Viola/Orsino which is just weird*

I don't go to the theatre much but I do enjoy a really well acted well written play sometimes. They walked the line between being so faithful the play loses all life, and so modern/obvious that you lose all the nuance.

A lot of modern male writers could stand to learn from the depth of Shakespeare's female characters. Which is not to say they're by any means perfect, just better than those of many modern writers :/

Anyway! It was fun! Had a very nice evening. Am feeling much more spoony than I would have expected, hope I don't have a "hangover" tomorrow.

I do not know why they used an actor for the promotional materials who is not in the play. I kept waiting for her to turn up.

(*)A term with a very different meaning in Western Australia to the one it has in the rest of the world.
