My "This is a Mary Sue self insert" warning kept blaring, but in this case a character you design yourself who is the centre of the story and everyone falls in love with is canon.
(*)Which is totally awesome. And not just for the romance, the plot and gameplay's pretty cool too :) I'm enjoying playing with a different character, even though 90% of the game is the same it feels different now I'm a cheerfully amoral human male mage with a short attention span rather than a rigidly moral grumpy female commoner dwarf.
