racebending first, and also just being prone to that sort of thing I spent the show imagining what the characters would "really" look like(*), and I had most trouble reconciling Katara and Sokka's appearance with the features I associate with Inuit people.
I decided to have a go at drawing one or both of them, and googling found me this casting discussion at racebending and from there I found Leah Angutimarik, who had the quality of youthful..somethingness I was looking for.
This boy was the closest I found for Sokka, but I didn't end up looking very hard.
(*)also the zany mixed up animals :) Of course my style is still a long way from true realism.
