1: Can everyone who wants to be on the sickblargle filter see this post?

2: Where would one buy large rolls of duct tape cheap? I want to make a duct tape sewing dummy.

3: Where are good places to go for reasonably priced size 16 clothes? I know size 18 is where it starts to get really annoying, but am I going to have problems if I go to Harbour Town? (I've gone up a dress size since I last properly went shopping)

I strongly would advise you not to go for a duct tape dummy. I made one a few years ago
1 - I passed out while I was being cut out.
2 - The taping process completely mooshed my body around, so the final product wasn't to my size anyway.
3 - It was really sticky, if you stuck pins into it they would come out covered in tape residue. Clothes also stuck to it and got tape reside on them.

I know that it sounds like a good idea at first, but it really isn't worth it. I have a Singer dressform which was $150, it's on the cheap end of dressforms and doesn't have the best build quality, but I'm happy with it. The duct tape one doesn't even save a great deal of money over cheap dressforms since duct tape, stuffing and something for the stand are all pretty costly already.

I got mine from the Singer store in Fremantle. Spotlight also have a comparable dressform that is a little cheaper and goes on sale from time to time, but I haven't heard any reviews of it.

Would Papier-mâché work?

Probably not - firstly you'd need to stand still for aaaages while it dried and more layers were added, secondly once dry it would be hard to get out of since it's not very flexible.

Ahahah. I'd totally forgotten about drying. Ok.

That is fucking horrifying, this is why I'm glad I don't sew.

A little bit more on topic, at sqbr. I had the weirdest experience opshopping for clothes recently (at the opshop near the old subiaco markets, if that's relevant). Two size 16 shirts, one too tight for me (my boobs are not that big) and the other mountains to large. Very frustrating. When I got to looking at skirts I just tried on any I liked the look of, because what else are you going to do? *rants*

Bloody different brand sizes. Should be uniform goddamnit.

I buy most of my clothes online, and alot of people are surprised by this and say "I would never buy something online, how do I know if it'll fit?", but online clothes generally have their measurements given in cm or inches which are uniform. As long as you know your measurements you're fine.

Don't get me started on the trend of "vanity sizing" :P I own clothes that fit labelled from size 6-12, and I damn well know that I'm never going to be size 6.

I'm always nervous of buying things online. I measure myself right before ordering, but my sizing doesn't really seem all standard.

So I tend to wind up in XL, XXL, because otherwise I'm not sure it'll fit around my breasts. (Which makes the rest of it much too big, but breathing easy is nice.) At a store I can just check how well it fits.

Yeah, luckily my bust-waist ratio is pretty standard, and I don't tend to buy things where the hip measurement is important.

While I've never made a whole dummy, I have used the "tape over a tshirt to make a close-fitting pattern" technique. My experiences were:

- masking tape or packing tape is WAY cheaper and does not stretch, giving a better result.
- trying to do a whole torso also had me unable to breathe and a little panicy / short-tempered.
- The whole torso had way too many complex curves to work well as a pattern anyway, so I was really glad I used $2 rolls of masking tape, rather than $10 rolls of cloth tape

I think you might have better luck with making a rough bodice out of some cheap fabric, doing the multiple fit/pin/baste runs and then using the finished product as your pattern for everything else. Having said that, I've been "getting around" to doing that for 12 months or so now.

Don't leave the duct tape dummy in the car!

My sister did, and ended up with a wrinkled mass... fortunately, she wasn't actually _needing_ it:-)

Op shops are pretty good for size 16, but hunting can be time consuming, which maybe is an issue? Does have the advantage of being zero-impact purchasing. I don't know any op-shops in Perth that give you credit for donating your old clothes.

Depending on your definition of reasonably priced, Target usually stocks sufficient size 16 (although it seems to be what they run out of first -- there's always 14 and 18). They were recently having clearance sales over here of old stock and damaged stock (e.g. you might have to sew a button back on), but it was very cheap. I don't know if those are still on (or in Perth).

I only ever bought shoes at Harbour Town, so I don't know about clothing. A lot of what's there is excess stock right?

I shop for size 16 clothes at op shops. :)

Also, I'm planning to bring all the clothing I can't/won't wear anymore to Perth in April and you can paw through it if you want. It'll probably be a wee bit more corporate then your normal style though...

A friend of mine has a duct tape sewing dummy and it seems to work well for her. I imagine problems with the dummy being tacky and such could be solved by using higher quality tape, but then the expense goes up, so it might be worth it, if you're doing a lot of sewing, to go for a dressform.

Either that or just sew to measurements all the time - I always have a period of try on, pin, sew, try on again when I'm sewing stuff. I can see how that could be draining for you, though - in which case I would imagine that the extra expense for a dressform is probably worth the aggravation you'll save.

Yeah, I can't offer any additional personal experience with either thing because I don't have either. I imagine if I were sewing more clothes than two or three costumes a year they might come in handy but I don't feel I need one at this stage. *shrug*

1: yes

Last time I went to Harbour Town it had a Maggie T...they might start at 18 though, I'm not sure. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding 16s in the other stores though I think.
