A while ago I saw [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn's awesome Gender-reversed Star Trek 2009 cast picspam and was hit the horrible realisation that I was going to have to draw it.

EDIT: Coloured and slightly corrected version below.

This image was the best I could find with a majority of the main cast, so not everyone's in it. You want the rest, you draw them yourself :) See my delicious bookmarks for the other reference shots.

If it was a smaller picture I'd fiddle with various aspects but I just don't have the energy.

Could you imagine, only one guy on the bridge. Hahaha.

It's such a interesting perspective on the gender imbalance though, a lot of people are just fine with it being that way. I was explaining this to a guy at work and he's like 'But why does it matter when most of the audience are guys anyway' and I got a bit frustrated with him, it's really hard for me to speak about these things in the real world with people who think my feelings aren't valid, or dismiss it's like it's nothing. For him it's an academic game, for me, it's hurtful.

But if you flip the genders, then it becomes noticeable, because people aren't used to women being dominant on a genre action type television show (Buffy and Xena one of a few exceptions). And sometimes I think people overplay the one female character, it's like 'But oh, you have Uhura'.

Then I think it goes back to where people over-estimate the minority, there is a saying somewhere, if you have a board of ten people, one woman is progress, two is diversity, three is a takeover.

It's getting better, but it's still oh so slow, so very slow. And I just want things to hurry up. I'm tired of it all, and tired of having my feelings dismissed.

In the late Brandon Tartikoff's book THE LAST GREAT RIDE, he talks about his varying advisory roles in the development of a number of NBC's eighties TV shows. One of his most interesting comments was about casting THE COSBY SHOW and THE GOLDEN GIRLS. There were so few roles for mature women and black actors that the showrunners had an incredible bounty of potential cast members to choose from. *Really good potential cast members.* Tartikoff phrased it memorably: they had so many great actors for the parts, NBC could have put together road companies.

My first thought was that female Chekov is not as cute as the male one :P

My second thought was "Why is it that black males always have to have bald heads?" But I guess that it would be just as fair to ask why female characters generally have longer hair than male ones. But I guess that we are entitled to some degree of aesthetics within our culture as to what looks nice on people.

He grew his hair in the last season of Angel, I remember. It looked good either way.

Hehe, that's what I thought you were going for, and I was going to say 'He's a helluva lot taller then that'.

Eee! I really like this.

My first thought was "Wait, why is Kirk BLONDE???" but after looking at liviapenn's post I can see why she chose Yvonne Strahovski for the role - I found the expressions eerily similar :)

My favourite is Bones - the expression is just so perfectly him (or her or maybe them)...

Uh, I should probably also mention that the Uhura in your coloured version looks like a hot bald woman to me...

Heh. For some reason I find the genre-reversed version less eerie than the original. I kept looking around thinking, "Wait, I'm sure there were women in the future!"

I did notice (or, if I'm wrong, "it seemed to me") that half the extras were women - there were armies of them in the "Enterprise gets loaded with barely-trained cadets" scene, and there were plenty in the sickbays - so, they were being nurses, too.

User [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn referenced to your post from Return of Gender-reversed Star Trek 2009 cast picspam (http://liviapenn.livejournal.com/558122.html) saying: [...] in that post, but I thought I'd also put the links in a new post: drew an adorable little pic based on one of the cast photos (http://alias-sqbr.livejournal.com/240507.html)... made a kickass photomanipped movie poster... and wants to know who'd be interested in a ficathonset ...
