Celes in my head

I've been playing Final Fantasy 6 recently (I'm about halfway through, if the walkthrough is any guide) thanks to penchaft. It's a VERY old game so you pretty much only see the characters as sprites, apart from a 3D rendered opening, and the difference in appearance is so pronounced it took me a few rewatchings of the opening to realise who they all were.

Anyway, one character who looked really different in my head was Celes. She's a general in the Evil Empire's army and from her sprite (here's a larger version if that's too teeny) I imagined her as fairly stocky and muscular. But, as I realised once I recognised her in the opening, she's actually supposed to be tall and willowy.

So I decided to draw her as she was in my head. Colours and costume based on the sprite, blame Square.


She's frowning because in the bit of the game I just got up to, the cavalcade of horrible thing which have happened to the characters thus far have gotten so bad she just attempted suicide. It's an enjoyable game, but disconcertingly dark for something animated by adorable little sprites.

I've never played the FF sprite games, other then FF7 (the original), but it's interspersed with some relatively neat cut CGI scenes, fairly groovy for the times.

I've never felt the urge to go earlier, but sometimes I think I should play FF8.

And the most warrior female character amongst all those (I have played) has been Drace in 12. But Tifa is fairly awesome too, but not so much with the stocky.

FF8 is pretty good, though the monsters level up with you which put me off (it's not that hard, but I like the security of being way overpowered :))

Heh, yeah, the deformed shape of the sprites does tend to make everyone's proportions look a bit different. I have to say that my own mental image of her while playing the game was/is closer to your depiction of her, so I think I'll stick with that. (c:

By the way, I loved playing FF6. Together with Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, those are my favourite old-ish Square games.

Her body is quite clearly skinnier than her head, if you look at the sprite! :D

Yes, but her head is also almost as tall as the whole rest of her body :)
