Thought I'd have a go at crossposting and also give a PSA:

If you want a Dreamwidth account, while you are welcome to join the queue you should also definitely get an OpenID account and validate the email address.

This
(a) Lets you comment, create a Friends reading list and even have icons, the only basic thing you can't do is post blog entries.
(b)Puts you in the running for an invite, and apparently guarantees you one by the 30th (a weekish from now)

For now, if you do get a proper account you can't join it to your OpenID but that functionality apparently is in the works.

nb I do not intend on crossposting much, since that'd just be annoying for people who've friended me both places. I just wanted to try it out :)

yeah, that would be super irritating.

I was figuring that in another month or so -- once I had a chance to see who was doing what -- I'd be sorting through who were the crossposters and who weren't, and then unsubscribing in one place or the other, accordingly.

What will determine what posts go where?

The ad-free thing + transparent management certainly explains the attraction of the service (hadn't bothered to look until now). I'm tempted to migrate across but I'd want to somehow take my LJ identity over there "intact" and abandon LJ if I did.

Which is apparently possible, so still tempted. "Dreamwidth" is an even worse name than "Livejournal" though.

Yeah, I am eternally mystified at how anyone could think either's a good name. And Dreamwidth with its ambiguous abbreviation...

Yeah, although it's hardly "carebearjournal.org", it's all just a bit upbeat for me. I prefer my site names neutral and professional sounding (didn't like "deadjournal" either). "Wordpress" is good, or even "blogger" (though I still object to the term "blog" in some inner chamber of my soul).

Yeah, (c-c-c-c-combo,) on the mailing list when they were discussing what DW points could be called, it was getting sickening - rainbows and raindrops and wishes... :|

What do you think about the people who are/will be crossposting to LJ, but only allowing comments at DW?

Mm. Someone on my DW readlist is doing this, and though most of her LJ flist are fine using openID, there's at least one of her LJ friends who's upset about this.

I think it makes a bit more sense for essay-style posts, but I don't get why for just journal-style ones.

Thanks for the tip about OpenId, I just signed up under my fandom blog name.

I hadn't thought about cross posting before. Actually, I keep forgetting that people who aren't in fandom will be migrating to DW.

I only hear about DW from fans and I'm looking forward to starting a fresh fandom blog totally seperate from my old political one.

So I was surprised to see postqueer over there already, it seems a bit beta to migrate a political com.

Assuming here that Fandom Love = [Invite + Icon Squee] > Beta Stage Woe.
