First off: do we meet more than one gender of any of the alien races? (Maybe we've met a male Quarian as well as Tali'Zorah?) The Asari are single sex, and species like the Elcor kind of ambiguous, but with the Salarians, Turians and Krogan it's gone past "everyone defaults to male" sexism to blatant lazy programming and it's kind of throwing me out of the worldbuilding. Unless I missed some I suppose, it only recently occured to me to pay closer attention. The fact that Wrex does his little spiel about Krogan issues with pregnancy then immediately says something like "Ask any Krogan if he'd rather fight or investigate science and he'll choose to fight" made me incredibly curious to know if there are lady Krogans and if they feel the same way, but there has currently been no way to find out.

Anyway, other than that I'm enjoying it. Eight or so hours in (yes, I have only been playing intermittently. I'm even less far through than it sounds since I did lots of sidequests and sometimes get distracted by the cat) and I only just now needed a walkthrough, and afaict I just did the old "not noticing a door behind a wall" mistake or something similar. Which given how much I suck at shooters shows how easy the "easy" setting is, plus I guess the fact that after DA:O and lots of Final Fantasy I am moderately competent at the other aspects of RPGs. One of the nice things about the more role-play-ish aspect of ME and Dragon Age, specifically the fact that sometimes there is no "right" choice, is that when I make a significant but not game-ruining mistake I see it as character building :) My Shephard is making the same sorts of lawful good with a dash of pragmatism sorts of choices my first Dragon Age character did, but the internal psychology is different: In DA:O I was expecting the world to be mostly fair, and the fact it wasn't led to a lot of disappointment. Plus being a Brosca left Martya with some serious trust issues anyway. Gina(*) on the other hand is older and comfortable with her position as a military commander, and makes her decisions with every understanding of what the consequences will be.

(*)Name chosen to be the one I liked closest to the default of "Jane". (The default for a Brosca is "Natia", thus Martya)
