On the naming of Lalafells
May. 5th, 2022 10:18 pmSo just spent WAY too much thought and a non-negligible amount of real life money on a new name for my Final Fantasy 14 character because it WASN'T LORE COMPLIANT. This game has definitely gotten its claws into me >.>
The name I settled on was Laneko Delaneko, which is also not entirely lore complaint but close enough that I can headcanon a backstory to go with it.
Below, the MANY MANY other names I came up with, most of which were just me having fun with the lalafell name structure.
Lalafell naming conventions
Syllable schemes:
Plainsfolk: AB-CB (m) ABB-AB (f)
Dunefolk: AAB-CCB (m) AAB-AB (f)
Some syllables I like:
ba cha na ra ro sha wa zo di pa sa sho ta to po cha ba ka ki la mo
Maba topa neko lito aka (B for Plainsfolk)
Scum villain:
Ningyingying Ningying
Qingqiqi Qingqi
Qingqingqi Qingqi
Scat:
Boopshedoop Bedoop
Bompbahbomp Bahbomp
Bopshoobop Shoobop
Dipdadip Dadip
Boopdoop Adoop
General silliness:
Hahaho Heheho
Micasa Sucasa
Yoyolo Yolo
Yoyoho Yoho
YoYoma Yoma
Yomama Yoma
Papayo Mamayo
Fruit:
Liliya Papaya
Popopya Papaya
Cocoya Papaya
Nanaya Papaya
Banana Bana
Neko names: (I eventually settled on this as a name ending, because it sounds pretty and also means cat)
Dunesfolk given names: Oneko, Moneko, Vaneko
Dunesfolk surnames: Anneko, Atoneko, Dalaneko
Oneko Mineko
Loloneko Memeneko
Lalaneko Laneko
Sasaneko Lalaneko
Laneko Loneko
Laneko Leneko
Seneko Laneko
Laneko Dalaneko
Laneko Kaneko
Laneko Zeneko
Lalafell names are supposed to sound a bit silly, but I didn't want it to be so silly it would throw me out of emotional moments. I did seriously consider Boopdoop Adoop though, it would be nice to imagine it making other people smile.
I actually meant to use Laneko Dalaneko but mistyped it and while "dela" isn't a standard name part it would be another $10AU to change it so DELANEKO WILL DO.
My character is theoretically female Dunesfolk and this is a male Plainsfolk syllable scheme using a female Plainsfolk given name and...idk, Elezen/Hyur syllable as part of the surname. My vague mental backstory is she's non-binary (but uses she/her pronouns since otherwise people are misgendering her which would feel gross) and has moved around a lot, and chose this name to be a mixture of types of name.
The reason I felt the need to change it after several years is that she is starting to feel like a real character to me. Hearing her referred to "Squibber Squar", the silly-but-not-in-a-lalafell-way name I came up with at the start based on my usual username, became increasingly jarring to the point I decided I'd get $10 of happiness out of changing it. And it DOES make me a lot happier.
Playing a lalafell character inside this RPG hero plot continues to be amusingly surreal. Teen boy is told he's not old or strong enough to fight by the side of "The warrior of Light", camera pans down to a tiny cute freckled girl half his height, etc.
