Some romancey canons, mostly anime-ish

m/f: Horimiya, 7'Scarlet, Hibi Chouchou
f/f: Sayonara Rose Garden, Adachi and Shimamura
m/m: My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting
m/f:
Horimiya: In progress m/f highschool rom-com anime, on Funimation/Animelab. This is pretty heteronormative, but the characters and relationships are endearing. The central romance is between an energetic popular girl and a shy moody unpopular guy, both of whom need someone who understands, accepts, and supports the person they are deep down. They get together partway through but the friendships and side romances keep things engaging.
7'Scarlet: mystery m/f otome about a woman trying to find her missing brother in a mysterious little town. I overall quite enjoyed this, some of the plot was a bit silly or repetitive, and the heroine is a bit of a blank slate everyone loves Just Because. But I got romance feels and enjoyed trying to figure out the mystery, and it is a lot more good-hearted and compassionate than most murder mysteries. Except the final Secret End, which was squicky and blah and imo is fine to just skip. Here's my post masterlist with detailed reactions and links to content notes.
Hibi Chouchou: Fluffy m/f shoujo manga romance about two socially awkward highschoolers. I got partway through and realised I'd read it before and got bored. Sweet, and ok for what it is.
f/f:
Sayonara Rose Garden: f/f historical romance manga about a Japanese maid working for a sad lesbian English lady. A bit too much melodramatic angst for me, though it does end happily.
Adachi and Shimamura: Fluffy highschool f/f anime about two oddball girls. This really dragged in the second half, once they got into a shippy dynamic the relationship development slowed to a crawl, even by the end one is still pretty oblivious. I did enjoy it overall, but don't expect an actual romance. On Funimation/Animelab.
m/m:
My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting: A Chinese webnovel m/m highschool romance. I liked some of it but it went from silly slice of life to Angsty Rich Boy Drama which isn't so much my thing.
Given: the Movie
** Content note: sexual assault **
Given the Movie: A continuation of the manga plot following on from the anime series, focussing on the relationship of the older two bandmates. From what I saw it's pretty good and quite faithful to the manga, but I hit the sexual assault plot and my brain went THAT'S ENOUGH OF THAT. I did read on in the manga, and it's handled relatively well as "person forgives and dates their assaulter" plots go, but if that's a trigger for you too step carefully. On Crunchyroll.
