Mainly because I watched the animated version and finally put together that "two" characters were the same person and have feelings about it.

In general going through the plot again with a visual guide (Jiangs wear purple and Jins wear yellow which makes them much easier to tell apart!) has helped me gain a much better grasp of what's going on with all the secondary characters. And something I didn't get across in my first post was that the secondary characters are really well drawn and engaging and many have VERY AFFECTINGLY TRAGIC BACKSTORIES.

Since afaict literally nobody who follows me is into this I'll give some backstory in case anyone is curious about what I'm having feelings about. And if nobody clicks the cut at least I'll have vented about my feelings to the void.

I've been semi avoiding the fandom because afaict a lot of them are Chinese speakers who have read the whole book, or English speakers who looked up spoilers, and either way they are very dangerous to be around. I've already spoiled myself a few times just trying to look up names to remind myself who characters are. I feel sorrier for anyone just following the animated/comic versions since those are even further behind.

**Spoilers up to Chapter 65**
So!

At the start of the story necromancer protagonist Wei Wuxian has recently gained a new body after dying 13 years ago during a war against pretty much every other magician in the country. He seems like a basically decent guy, and the story has been coy about exactly what he did to make LITERALLY EVERYONE think he had to die.

Wei Wuxian is understandably trying to hide who he is to avoid getting murdered, instead taking on the identity of the guy who summoned him: two bit magician Mo Xuanyu, who got kicked out of the Jin sect for creeping on dudes. He encounters a teenage boy in Jin robes who "recognises" him and the two trade insults. Wei Wuxian insults the boy's parents on principle, and only afterwards realises who he is: Jin Ling, who he last saw as a toddler just after his parents were murdered. Everyone thinks Wei Wuxian murdered them, and it's clear that Wei Wuxian feels at least somewhat responsible.

Jin Ling's grumpy uncle Jiang Chen shows up. The three are attacked by a demon, and to save Jin Ling Wei Wuxian does a "summon a nearby angry spirit and get them to fight for me" spell. This sort of magic is forbidden, but not difficult, and he's hoping he can play it off as him being a bit shady but not dangerous. But the spirit that turns up is Wei Wuxian's own Ghost General, a vicious and dangerous killing machine, who was supposedly turned to dust by Wei Wuxian's enemies during the war.

This doesn't look great so Wei Wuxian sends the ghost general off again as soon as possible. Jiang Chen realises who Wei Wuxian is, and so tries to kill him. It turns out he has spent the last 13 years convinced Wei Wuxian would show up again, capturing and torturing anyone who looked like they might be him in disguise.

Lan Wangji shows up and saves Wei Wuxian, arguing that he really is just the two bit magician Mo Xuanyu, and taking him into protective custody.

The downside of this is that Lan Wangji is watching Wei Wuxian very closely, and obviously summoning the ghost general again will look pretty suspicious. But he manages to do it, and discovers someone has not only shackled the ghost general but put spikes into his head to make him a pliable tool instead of able to think for himself. Once the spikes are removed the general says he was captured and hidden in a dungeon. He's obviously very loyal to Wei Wuxian but it's not clear how much of a person he is, since all he seems to care about is following orders. Lan Wangji catches the two of them together and clearly hates the ghost general with a burning passion.

Also, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji keep bumping into Jin Ling, who keeps trying to impress his uncle by capturing some big dangerous demon but just ends up getting into trouble and needing to be bailed out by the grownups. The fact that Wei Wuxian keeps bailing him out and giving snarky but useful advice eventually endears Wei Wuxian to Jin Ling, and they develop a cute friendship. Unfortunately Jiang Chen sees it as less "this guy keeps helping my nephew" and more "this guy who I am sure is Evil Necromancer Wei Wuxian keeps being around when my nephew is nearly killed".

Then a whoole bunch of other plot stuff happens but it's not relevant to what I'm talking about right now.

And then there's the stuff in flashbacks!

We see Wei Wuxian, Jiang Chen, and Lan Wangji as teenagers at Magic School. Wei Wuxian is a commoner who was adopted by the Jiang clan and is treated like Jiang Chen's brother. They have a cute relationship, with Jiang Chen as the uptight heir and Wei Wuxian the cheerfully mischievous genius who is better at everything and keeps dragging Jiang Chen into shenanigans, which Jiang Chen pretends to hate more than he really does. One thing they agree on is that they love their (foster) sister, and don't think her fiance is worthy of her despite being the heir to the fancy-pants Jin clan.

Lan Wangji is the even more uptight prefect who keeps catching and punishing Wei Wuxian when he breaks the rules, and spends a lot of time grumpily trying to hide how INCREDIBLY INTO Wei Wuxian he is. Sadly Jiang Chen is too busy keeping out of Lan Wangji's way for the two to bond about That Damn Wei Wuxian.

We meet more men of this generation(*), including members of the villainous and domineering Wen clan. Despite resenting the clan on the whole, Wei Wuxian befriends and encourages Wen Ning, a shy, sweet Wen boy with social anxiety.

(this is the point the anime is up to in episode 8)

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are Forced To Share A Cave and become better friends. (this will plausibly be the plot of episode 9 and I am looking forward to it :D)

The Wen clan become increasingly awful, culminating in them taking over the Jiang sect headquarters and murdering Jiang Chen's parents (eg Wei Wuxian's foster parents) The two boys barely escape with their lives, and are rescued by Wen Ning, who is really sweet and helpful despite putting himself in great danger by defying his clan.

Unfortunately Jiang Chen is unconscious for some key parts of the rescue and even once they've safely healed and moved on refuses to believe any member of the Wen clan can be trusted. Wei Wuxian says goodbye to Wen Ning and hopes nothing bad happens to him.

Some of the nastier members of the Wen clan capture Wei Wuxian and leave him in a haunted corpse field for dead.

He comes back three months later a necromancer. He doesn't explain how he got out, but he is fucked up. Lan Wangji is aghast at the genuinely horrifying necromancy Wei Wuxian is doing but Wei Wuxian blows him off. Jiang Chen doesn't care, all that matters is Wei Wuxian has massively levelled up in his ability to murder people and the two set out to bring down the Wen clan and have their revenge.

This is the end of the flashbacks thus far.

Wei Wuxian is about 18 at this point, and dies at around 22. So over the next 4 years he will help bring down the Wen clan, become a highly venerated general...and then become a hated necromancer who is considered to have horribly betrayed the Jiang clan and ends up in a vicious siege that leaves the world still scattered with walking corpses 13 years later, and makes Jiang Chen and Lan Wangji his enemies.

So that's going to be...fun.

Now to what I didn't realise until watching the anime (all of which is obvious to anyone who doesn't totally suck with names lol):

Wen Ning is the ghost general. That poor sweet guy :( How did he die? What led him and Wei Wuxian to break off and form their own group? Did it happen before or after he died? What happened between him and Lan Wangji to make Lan Wangji hate him so much? Does he blame Wen Ning for what happened to Wei Wuxian?

Jin Ling's mother, who Wei Wuxian insulted and is supposed to have murdered...is Wei Wuxian's foster sister Jiang Yanli, who he loved dearly. Did Wei Wuxian really kill her? I suspect he didn't, but then who did, and how did the blame fall on Wei Wuxian?

What happened between Wei Wuxian and Jiang Chen to make Jiang Chen hate Wei Wuxian so much? Obviously the death of Jiang Yanli was part of it but it feels even bigger that that.

No wonder Wei Wuxian is so protective of Jin Ling, he's his uncle twice over: he's the foster brother of Jin Ling's mother, and is possessing the half brother of Jin Ling's father.

There's this heartbreaking moment where Jin Ling realises the man he's been slowly getting to like is not his uncle Mo Xuanyu, but is the ghost of the man who killed his parents and has apparently murdered and possessed his uncle.

Also! I won't spoil the specifics, but there's clearly Plots and Schemes going on, and I'm beginning to wonder if Mo Xuanyu was manipulated into summoning Wei Wuxian in the first place, and possibly was never actually mentally ill or a sexual harasser(**) or even gay. We've already had precedent of learning backstory by seeing through a ghost's eyes, perhaps they'll summon the ghost of Mo Xuanyu, it does feel like he deserves to show up as a character since his body is so central. And it feels like Wei Wuxian is being set up as a convenient universally hated fallguy for Something Terrible. Though I'm not sure what, and a compelling argument was made for there being two Bad Guy Groups at cross purposes with each other which complicates things.

But yeah, I want everyone to be ok and be friends and they're very much not ;_; Also I don't find Lan Wangji's older brother very exciting but he's a sweetie too and he feels like the kind of character who either turns out to be evil or dies tragically and I don't want either of things to happen because I like him too :(

Other thoughts:

There's a Ghost Flashback side story about the adventures of Blind Badass Xiao Xingchen and it turns out people ship him with his nemesis Xue Yang instead of his tragic best friend Song Lan and normally I am all for enemy shipping but Xue Yang is an ASSHOLE who was VERY MEAN TO MY FAVES and Xiao Xingchen/Song Lan is a MUCH BETTER SHIP. Some of the Xiao Xingchen/Xue Yang fanart is pretty good though, lots of knives and blood but there's good weird Xiao Xingchen/Song Lan too! (If anyone reading this ships Xiao Xingchen/Xue Yang it's fine you can't help having TERRIBLE TASTE)

Every now and then I think about the plot from Lan Wangji's perspective (the third person limited POV does sometimes go a little into his head but it's always deliberately vague about his feelings)
Like, he's the 15ish year old second in line to a respectable clan, and very happy in his role. He follows the rules and does his homework and is shaping up to be a really talented cultivator/magician. The other boys his age find him a bit intimidating so it's not clear if he has any friends other than his older brother, but he's so polite and righteous that everyone respects him and that's what he thinks he wants. I'd guess he's never been attracted to anyone and sees this as a sign of how chaste and righteous he is.

And then Wei Wuxian shows up: just as talented as Lan Wangji if too lazy to be as skilled, constantly breaking the rules, never does his homework, never shows any respect to anyone and see-saws wildly between teasing Lan Wangji and acting like they're best fiends. And he's HORRIBLY UNDENIABLY ATTRACTIVE and Lan Wangji has absolutely no idea how to deal with it, especially when Wei Wuxian keeps breaking the rules about chaste behaviour by flirting with girls and replacing Lan Wangji's poetry book with porn.

Despite Lan Wangji grumpily avoiding Wei Wuxian as much as possible they get thrown together a lot and eventually form what could be the start of a genuine friendship.

And then Wei Wuxian becomes a necromancer and starts horrifically murdering people with the help of vicious, resentment powered ghosts and nobody but Lan Wangji seems to think this is bad. Until everyone does, and some presumably very tragic and awful things happen, and Wei Wuxian dies.

Lan Wangji spends the next 13 years in mourning, doing things like filling his gardens with rabbits because Wei Wuxian liked them.

And then Wei Wuxian shows up possessing the body of a hot 20-something twink, doing exactly the same illegal necromancy that got him killed the first time.

When Lan Wangji tries to take him into protective custody Wei Wuxian tries to escape by flirting with Lan Wangji in the hopes he'll be disgusted and let him go. The more Lan Wangji ignores him, the harder Wei Wuxian flirts, and now all of Lan Wangji's students think they're sleeping together. But Wei Wuxian himself clearly thinks of both of them as straight and doesn't even think Lan Wangji likes him very much.

Like I just imagine Lan Wangji's mental state being a mixture of AAAHHHH and WHY IS THIS HAPPENING under his stone faced Grown Up facade.

He gets drunk a couple of times and does things like tie Wei Wuxian's hands together and say MINE and push him onto a bed then has just...no idea what to do with him next. Wei Wuxian licks him to make him let go and Lan Wangji gets flustered and is all WHOA HOW DO I GET HIM TO DO THAT AGAIN and Wei Wuxian is both Into It and in dogged denial about what this all implies. But the shell around his denial is cracking, eg here is a quote from the current chapter 65:

Lan WangJi was reading a book, his head down. A paper lantern was on the corner of the desk. Against the soft light of the fire, his face was even more like a piece of fine jade. Even his indifferent expression and his light eyes seemed to have been glazed a shade warmer. He was so beautiful that it seemed unreal. Caught by the moment, Wei WuXian was somehow entranced. Involuntarily, he inched closer.

Lan WangJi looked up, asking, “What?”

Wei WuXian immediately returned to himself, “Nothing. Your bookmark looks quite pretty.”

Nnnng.

Only fifty four chapters to go.

(*)Women can apparently be magicians too but you wouldn't know it.
(**)Yeah I'm not a fan of the gay mentally ill sexual harasser plot and making it all fake wouldn't be much of an improvement, but I'm making predictions not saying what would be good.

Thank you for sharing all of this! It's fascinating reading and your write up of it is hugely entertaining.
