They all died horribly in a space war thousands of years ago and were reincarnated on modern day Earth when the monster who killed everyone came back. And over the course of the series, the bad guys manage to kill everyone but Sailor Moon a couple times, but she uses her magic to bring them back (it costs them their memories the first time, but they get those back eventually.) I promise we don't cry about their deaths because they stay dead, they're just really intense and moving scenes even if you know it's going to be all right in the end.
