Geeky Girl's and Women's Anime/Manga My original brainstorming post
Josei and Shoujo The presentation I gave
Hold Me Now The Princess Tutu vid I showed
Further notes and recs:
Josei
Princess Jellyfish/Kuragehime by Akiko Higashimura: 8 volume ongoing manga, 11 episode anime covers start, recently licensed
Gokusen by Kozueko Morimoto: 15 volume finished manga, 12 episode season anime covers start, anime licensed in english
Shoujo
Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi: 18 volume finished manga, finished 5 season anime covering the same plot (roughly), both available in English
Card Captor Sakura by CLAMP: 12 volume manga, 70 episode anime, very similar, both licensed
Revolutionary Girl Utena by Kunihiko Ikuhara: Finished 39 episode anime, available in English. Don't read the manga.
Princess Tutu by Ikuko Itoh: 26 episode anime. Manga by someone else,. apparently not very good (also: shonen??)
Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya: 23 V manga finished. 26 ep anime covers start of manga, unsatisfying ending but otherwise good. Both licensed.
Not sure of genre
Hayao Miyazaki
Dennou coil
12 Kingdoms
Angelic Layer
The Manga Guide to Databases
Definitely seinen/shonen but I rec them anyway
Puella Magi Madoka Magicka
Full Metal Alchemist
Azumanga Daioh
Mai Hime
El Hazard
Not very geeky:
Ouran High School Host Club (shoujo)
Morishima Akiko (Yuri)
Skip Beat (shoujo)
Kimi ni todoke (shoujo)
Kimi wa petto (josei)
Other panelists talked about:
Vampire Princess Miyu
Magical Knight Rayearth
Aria (not actually shoujo/josei, but good)
Bunny Drop (problematic ending, good until then)
Other stuff I have forgotten, sorry
Other people's recs from my lj/dw posts:
Antique Bakery (slashiness filled with cake and baking geekery)
They Were Eleven (character-driven science fiction. It's a movie and a short manga. Shojo?)
Otomen (Asuka doesn't want to be a woman but now must hide the fact that he likes cute things, sewing and cooking.)
Fujoshi Rumi (Lots of good natured yaoi fangirl humor.)
Aoi Hana ( yuri manga and 11-episode anime about high school girls in drama club)
Paradise Kiss
W Juliet (nice shojo manga about the developing relationship between a girl raised in a dojo full of brothers and a boy raised in a kenpo dojo full of sisters)
FAKE (about two police officers in NY) and Until the Full Moon (the son of a vampire and a werewolf who turns into a girl on the full moon)
Honey and Clover (josei manga following the romance of five art school students)
Love DNA XX (world without men)
Ooku by Fumi Yoshinaga (an alternate history of medieval Japan in which an unknown disease kills most of the male population, leading to a matriarchal society)
