Original art: Dragons and women with tentacles

Three of these are for junetide, an original art/writing exchange I did recently. All pictures have descriptions. (I should post about the awesome gift I got, too. Maybe later!)

This was my main piece, a gift for badgerbag, who gave the prompt "Dragons don’t need to breathe. Somehow, humans are able to use them for space travel". I spent a while trying to come up with a backstory and lifecycle and consistent physics before deciding to just have fun with the idea.

Before we were given our assignments I found myself really inspired to draw dragons for some reason, so decided to do the combination of prompts I was 90% sure had been left by gretel (I was right, though I was assigned the other dragon prompt and didn't end up making this picture as polished as I'd have liked)

I love the expression on the junkyard dragon's face - it's so delightfully smug and content. The dragon! in! space! is great, too, because you do non-human intelligent expressions so well!

Thank you for posting to tumblr as well as DA, because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to see the grumpy cephalopod and diver! I love the brown jellyfish hair, too, even though I have had painful experiences with brown jellyfish tentacles!

I think I forgot to comment on the junkyard dragon last time around. What I like best about it is both their facial expressions. I like to imagine that they have a dignified rivalry and the dragon thinks the human is slightly ridiculous, and also takes herself too seriously. The dragon is a bit of a jokester in my continuity.

That aspect of posting to Tumblr didn't occur to me (I post mature art so rarely) but I'm glad it helped.

Any time I swim in the ocean/river (not often) I am deeply paranoid about jellyfish. But I seem to like drawing scary things :)
