What I've been reading and stuff!
Aug. 6th, 2013 12:40 pmI don't think I've finished anything recently, but I'm in the middle of several things.
Books:
"Haunted" by Kelly Armstrong. I've been enjoying this well enough, it's interesting having a book in this series where the romance is fairly minor (getting back together with an ex) so we focus more on the nicely morally ambiguous heroine kicking ass. But I am stalled right near the end because ohhhh the rape culture gender essentialism, where ALL sexual predators are straight men and women can fight against their victim status but it's still kind of inherent to being a woman. Ick.
"Santa Olivia" by Jacqueline Carey: started this yesterday and am quite enjoying it, it's that plausible slow decline sort of post apocalyptic setting, where the powerless just keep getting squeezed that little bit more and more but still find ways to eke out happiness where they can. I like the compassion for everyone in the community, even collaborators, and I don't mind the dry tone the way I did in Kushiel's Dart. Also apparently there are lesbians later :D
Reread a manga which shall remain nameless until after reveals for Paralells, may have thoughts on it later.
Music:
Been listening to Fantasies by Metric a lot
TV:
Utterly stalled on Orphan Black but determined to finish it one day.
Started watching "Say I Love You" on Crunchy Roll, am quite liking it so far though it does that "guy continues to be affectionate to girl who tells him to get lost but is secretly just too self conscious to respond" thing. Still, she is genuinely weird and awkward, and I am a sucker for the "sweet natured popular guy sees the secret loveableness of weird awkward unpopular girl, helps her discover the joy of friendship" genre (see also Kimi Ni Todoke).
I watched one episode of Natsume Yujin-cho (Natsume's book of friends) and it was pretty good but I'm not in the mood for stuff centering on male characters right now. Anyway, as far as I can tell from one episode it's about a boy who can see spirits who in his teens discovers his grandmother's secret book of spirits she defeated in battle and decides to set them free. It's a little like XXXholic.
Also I realised Crunchy roll lets you add things to a queue which makes it easier to keep track of future things I want to watch and which episode I'm up to. On my queue currently: Silver Spoon, Free, Gintama, Kaiji, Girls und Panzer, Natsume Yujin-cho, Chi's Sweet Home, Kids on the Slope, Say I Love You
So I have quite a lot to watch when I feel like it!
