Fanart Meme: Day One
Jul. 27th, 2011 03:04 pmVia my network I came across this fanart meme, adapted by
ratcreature from a fanfic meme and it seemed like fun. I can see myself getting bored before the end because I have a ridiculously short attention span, but never mind.
1 – How did you first get into creating fanart, and what was the first fandom you made art for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
Heh. I can't even answer the first question properly, oh well.
I have always drawn a fair amount, and some of that art has always been fanart, though I used to be a bit snobby about it. When I got a website I made no distinction between original and fannish art and assumed that noone but my friends would be interested in either. I did a moderate amount of Pratchett art and craft in my late teens/early twenties, I don't think any of it is online any more. I started posting to DeviantArt when the website went down but it took a while to get into the community aspects there at all.
Unless you count
skeletor_hordak, I think the first time I deliberately showed fanart to anyone other than my friends was this Firefly comic. But my first priority there was a fandom whose characters would celebrate Chinese New Year, while I like Firefly I'm not super fannish about it.
As I recall the first fandom where I was strongly inspired to draw multiple pieces of fanart and show it to other fans was Avatar the Last Airbender at the end of 2009. I think it's a combination of loving the show and the art style suiting the way I draw, plus the people at
avatar_fans were encouragingly friendly and creative (I vaguely tried getting into Pride and Prejudice fandom after writing fic for it and drawing one or two pictures, but it really didn't click)
