The adventures of Leslie Winkle
Jan. 16th, 2011 03:30 pmI have been feeling fairly cruddy recently, but it gave me a chance to get around to reading all six volumes of "Scott Pilgrim". I really liked it, the plot, characterisation and world is more complex and interesting than the film though I found it a little more confusing. As with Homestuck, I thought "Wow, this surreal 80s/90s geeky nostalgia is pitched just right for me, I wonder how old the author is" and they turned out to be exactly the same age as me :)
I've also been watching the adventures of Leslie Winkle, an eight episode sitcom about a snarky female physicist hidden within the much less appealing "The Big Bang Theory". Which is to say, I've been watching all the episodes with Sara Gilbert's character in because otherwise the inherent assumption that theoretical physicist and woman are mutually exclusive annoys me too much(*). Plus I don't feel like watching the whole show and it gave me a way of dipping in an out other than watching over Cam's shoulder whenever I happened to wander into the room. Anyway, OTHER than the fact that it's all about the (mostly white and often obnoxiously straight) dudes the geek humour is pretty well done and it's a moderately amusing sitcom. I remember coming across a bazillion fic and art recs ages ago, though I at this point I find all the male characters annoying enough that I think shall only be satisfied with femslash and lady centered gen. Perhaps Leslie/Leonard's doctor girlfriend who vanished without a trace one episode (as played by the amazingly gorgeous Sarah Rue)
And finally: OMG HOMESTUCK WHAT. (I have no further coherent thoughts on this topic at this juncture)
(*)I got 2/3 of the way through an undergraduate physics degree before realising that even theoretical physics was too fuzzy for me and switching to pure mathematics, so I take this rather personally.
