Spoilers!!!
Unspoilery review
So I was not sold on Nat/Bruce. I really wanted to be, I like their characters, think they're both cute, and think they could be good together in theory. But they played up the angst so much we never got to see them be HAPPY together. I am open to fic which fills in the gaps, though.
I was glad that it wasn't, as the trailers implied, Tony making a functioning Skynet without oversight then being surprised when it went rogue. I mean as Cam pointed out, they KNOW the staff is evil and tricksy, he should have had more safeguards in place, but "does test on staff and staff takes over and turns itself into an all powerful AI" is still less ridiculous than "makes all powerful AI on purpose, is surprised when it goes rogue". I shall just assume he was planning on some oversight/failsafes etc for his planned non-evil Ultron.
They really did just vaguely gesture towards the ethics/feelings around US military intervention, oh well. I guess that's the pattern for these films.
I was spoiled for Clint's farm and family, and had heard enough spoilers to figure out that the empty body would become fused with Jarvis, I'm curious how I would have felt about those points if I hadn't been spoiled. I liked that Clint had a pretty bright red shirt on and didn't die, and that he got to be a father-ish figure to to Wanda. I like his friendship with Nat being so central to both their lives, it made up for the disappointment of Nat/Bruce. I also liked that she's still friends with Steve, and that he had his own failed attempts at getting her a date. Captain America 3: Nat and Steve team up to get their angsty boyfriends back.
I liked all the cute moments between the different characters, even if they did makes things a bit bloated. Tony continues to have great chemistry with Bruce and Steve, canon LIs be damned. The "my girlfriend is more awesome than your girlfriend" moment with Thor was cute though. I'm not sure the movie passed the Bechdel test, asides from the Red Room scene (Naaaattttt).
Yay Sam! So does this mean the new Avengers will be in future movies? Vision felt a bit flat, I hope he gets a bit more characterisation if he does more in later movies. I really like Wanda, and am ok with Pietro being fridged as part of their rocky road to redemption (I liked Pietro too, but not as much). I still miss Terence Howard as Rhodey but like Don Cheadle's version too.
Could have done with Vision's personality being explored more, I love me some complex non human constructs, but there's only so much you can do in one movie. I liked how Ultron was influenced by Tony and HATED it. I'd not believe that they could really have gotten rid of all of him (he was smart enough to have off site backups) but with a magical computer God thing after him I guess it's as plausible as the many other things the movie handwaved.
...now I feel like rocky road.

I said to someone else the other day 'is it bad that I'm looking forward to the fanfiction that comes out of the movie more than the actual movie?' Lol.
I liked Vision, but I wish he'd been explored more. And hearing Ultron talk in 'Tony's' voice from the beginning was awesome and not something I'd picked up in the advertisements.
For me, one of the things that left me feeling super flat was that Vision could pick up Thor's hammer - I checked with Glen and he doesn't think this is canon. It just felt really gimmicky, like a scriptwriter or someone else was going 'oooOOOO look what *I* can do.' The entire cinema gasped, but that was the moment where I was yanked out of the film and struggled to find any interest in it again. The weird thing was I went in with pretty low expectations as well, but this left me feeling flatter than any previous Marvel film. Which is strange for me, because aside from that one thing, on the surface of it I still thought it was a good movie with lots of explode-y things (which I enjoy).
Also 'please be a secret door / please be a secret door....yey' must have been one of the cutest lines.
Oooo Rocky Road sounds good!

Date: 2015-04-26 12:42 am (UTC)I thought the hammer thing was silly, lazy storytelling but it didn't massively bother me. It's funny the things that throw you out of a story, or don't, I can definitely see why this movie didn't work for some people.
