Made a Mastodon Account!

There was some discussion on twitter about how appalling twitter is, and since Mastodon seems to be the most popular alternative I decided to check it out. And then the helper tool led me to an instance that let me be sqbr@im-in.space and I had to join.

Anyway, if you have an account add me so I have someone to follow! I can't really speak to whether it's a good social network since my network right now is just me and the status account, but it seems ok for posting and stuff. And I know I have seen interesting looking people mention having accounts, so next time that happens I can follow them.

Thinking about how Bladerunner 2049 could have been better

I wrote an off the cuff review on twitter. But overall: I liked the central arc, about a bladerunner who knows he's a replicant, and is numbed to the emptiness of his life, getting dragged into the mess caused by the events of the previous Bladerunner movie. Ryan Gosling does a good job of looking beaten up and sad, and the visuals were pretty effective in a bleak cyberpunk dystopia kind of way. But for a story about the question of who counts as a real person it sure could have done with 1000% less objectification of women and exotification of POC.

Also there were a lot of random loud Inception-esque BLAAAAARP noises, at least in the Titan-whatever cinema we were in. They undercut the emotion of various scenes and also would probably be unpleasant for people with some hearing issues.

Anyway, sound balance aside I've been pondering how the basic plot could have been made into a more enjoyable movie. I'm having trouble sleeping, I think in part because all those objectified boobs did bad things to my brain, so here's some rambling thoughts.

Spoilers like WHOA, and it won't make much sense if you haven't seen the film.

The Age of Remixes!

I did Dragon Age Remix and Remix Revival one after the other, which means I have a WHOLE HEAP of remixes by both me and other people to link to. Below the cut: Eight works about female characters from Dragon Age (mostly dwarves), and one Portal fic.

Image descriptions at each link.

Halfassed Hiveswap Act 1 Walkthrough

Hiveswap Act 1 is the long awaited Homestuck point and click adventure game! It's a lot of fun and not TOO hard but I still got stuck sometimes. Also quite short! Here's a full playthrough video I used when I got stuck.

Note for anyone with bad reflexes: the vast majority of it isn't time based but one section is and I found it mildly challenging as someone with very poor hand eye coordination. Also there's some references to abusive behaviour on par with stuff in Homestuck.

Below the cut is a half remembered text walkthrough. It's just the relevant instructions, but still pretty spoilery.

Food delivery in Perth

So after vaguely noticing the rise of Ubereats I decided to investigate the options for food delivery in Perth again, and lo! They have improved enough that there are now options I can eat available in my area!

The sites I have found and how they looked for my fairly central suburb:

  • Menulog Moderate range, what I ended up using.
  • Eatnow Similar to Menulog, but website was a little less helpful regarding opening times.
  • Ubereats Largest range. But part of Uber and thus evil.
  • Deliveroo Significantly worse range than all the others.

I ended up picking Taiwanese Cafe which has a nice range of food I can eat as well as some stuff Cameron likes. And Taiwanese desserts!! I LOVE TAIWANESE DESSERTS and have had trouble finding anywhere easy to get them. The food was overall pretty good: the red bean and pearls dessert wasn't the best I've had but still satisfying, the popcorn chicken was super tasty, the teriyaki chicken bento perfectly nice, and the egg pancake a little greasy but ok. The only genuinely mediocre dish was the spring rolls.

The menulog ordering process was very painless, and the delivery guy had my number for when he got lost (our set of units has a very confusing numbering system) You're in trouble if you want ingredient lists etc, but that's true of most delivery.

EDIT for my own use since menulog has no favourites system (*plain rice available)

There's a hundred ways to cover my badfic past

So I am finally getting around to fixing the NINETY OR SO broken images on my AO3 account. (THANKS PHOTOBUCKET) I settled on Nickpic as a new image host, rather arbitrarily. I've been getting random inconsistent upload errors so I'm not sure I'd rec them, they better not cause me to have to upload everything again.

To make it all feel less like yak shaving(*) I decided to go through from the start and fix up all my old works, since there's a growing list of minor issues like broken formatting I've been meaning to poke at. I am currently one and a half pages in, of nine (eg at about 30 works of 180 /o\)

It's interesting going through everything in chronological order. Right now I'm at April 2010 and past!me still hasn't learned how to format dialogue, but has sort of gotten the hang of chins. Figuring out how long legs are is still a ways in the future. (THEY'RE SO LONG)

A lot of this stuff is not relevant to modern fannish interests (and also...not very good) but I'm going to intermittently post old stuff to tumblr if I think people might enjoy it. I'm still pretty happy with Mafdet Slayer of Serpents, a Stargate comic I did about a Gu'ald cat. Though it's definitely from my pre-understanding-chins period.

(*)A software term I learned from Cam, referring to a large, frustrating and ultimately pointless task. It's easier to spell than sisyphean :)

Predicting Food Fads

A while ago I wrote this post about predicting food fads, then didn't get around to posting it. In the meantime [tumblr.com profile] yiduiqie posted links to two different new "Asian food is the new Western food" fads that bear no resemblance to my predictions whatsoever. I am thus posting this now before I look even sillier :)

So! I sometimes ponder what foods will become the new shiny food in Australia next.

A vague attempt at documenting my attempt to make neural network art

Neural Network/Deep Learning/Style Transfer art is this sort of thing.

This is mostly for my own reference when I next feel up to poking at the problem some more.

Unfortunately, this stuff is still fairly cutting edge, and all the documentation assumes you're an AI researcher running Linux. I'm sure there'll be simple to use graphics programs aimed at artists eventually, but for now the only things along those lines are websites and apps, which lack the flexibility I want.

When a computer science major becomes an artist

Perspective is hard, and redrawing the same design from different angles is frustrating.
*attempts to learn perspective*
*gives up and learns 3D modelling instead*

These 3D renders are great for perspective and different angles but they're not very pretty.
*attempts to learn digital painting*
*gives up and uses neural networks to process the renders*

These neural networks make everything pretty but it's a pain uploading the render, and I worry the site/app might disappear.
*tries digital painting again*
*gives up and learns how to run and train my own neural networks*

I mean I haven't actually installed the neural network yet, because that would require getting out of bed and installing things on the Windows machine, which I'm not awake enough for today. But it looks like fun :D

EDIT: I am going to be installing packages until I die.

Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video Now available in Australia with a free 7 day trial!

A different 'Amazon Prime' site that seems to list the same stuff if you want to check it out without signing up

I signed up, poked through the fairly limited database, could only find one thing I really liked the look of (American Gods), watched a bit, got bored, and cancelled the trial. So, not a ringing endorsement from me. But hey, it was free and filled some time.

(People outside Australia may not understand how exciting it is to have streaming tv here at all. Thanks for the tip [personal profile] lilysea)
