Percentage of Works at AO3 (and sometimes Fanfiction.net)

Meme from shadaras: How big are your fandoms? List them in order of the number of works posted for them at AO3.

Man I love how many different ways there are to have fun with AO3 numbers :D Everyone else I've seen do this meme checked for how many are in English but I couldn't be bothered, especially since half of mine are art so language is less relevant.

I have created works for *counts* SEVENTY FOUR (?!) different fandoms, so I'm just going to include the canons where (1) I have created more than two works (2) there's more than 50K or less than 100 works on the AO3 (3) it was otherwise interesting. This still leaves A Lot!

I decided it would be fun to compare numbers for a few fandoms where I have also posted fic to fanfiction.net. I should have separated out crossovers but I'm too lazy.

Note that about half of my works on the AO3 are art, and I don't cross-post everything, so the number of works at fanfiction.net doesn't always match.

ff.net: That one work on the AO3 is art, but I was curious to compare fandom sizes anyway, and there is no category for the novel afaict. There is one for The Untamed, which has 404 works compared to 36354 on the AO3, phew. Searching for "Wei Wuxian" (the main character) gets a few more works under "ManHua/Chinese Comics" but that only has 1300 fics total. Which does seem to include a large proportion of MDZS/Untamed fic, specifically a lot of "What if Wei Wuxian was a girl" haha.

ff.net: Afaict all MCU films have to be tagged "Avengers"?? For which there are 51000 fics.

So my two takeaways are (a) fanfiction.net is roughly similar to the AO3 for many fandoms, but seems to match my experience that there's more works for very old fandoms like Pride and Prejudice and older anime like Skip Beat!, and less for more recent fandoms (b) I need to make a few more works for some super small fandom on the AO3 so I can have the majority of fanworks, and be KING.

Also it's interesting seeing which larger fandoms have similar numbers. Like MDZS and Homestuck, which have very different histories, and felt very different as fandoms to be in.

The largest takeaway I have from this has nothing to do with any of your works ^^;; and it's "wow, FFnet has REALLY lost a lot of market share from what I remember".

Yeah the comparison with ff.net was the most interesting part of it for me too. I've noticed less feedback from over there lately too, compared to the same fics on AO3.

What I've taken away from this is tagging MDZS, The Untamed, and variations is confusing on multiple platforms, and you have created so much for Dragon Age! It's not one of the fandoms I associated you with, in the past.

Also, that my mind immediately wants to see big numbers, "maybe find a tiny fandom? write 90% of the fic!"

Yes, the fandoms where I made 50% of the (two) works are very satisfying!

Most of the Dragon Age works were made a little after the first and second games came out, which was before we met. I still make the odd work, but the obsession does not burn as brightly.
