Thanks to everyone who suggested menstral cups!
I ended up going for a Fleurcup since I was told they are easy to clean and OMG is it ever. No little fiddly bumps and raised text! No little hollow tube at the bottom that's impossible to properly clean! Otherwise it works just like my mooncup did. I got the larger size since I am over 25 and it's been perfectly comfortable.
Here's the original post if you want to see everyone's suggestions.

That sounds very useful! Luckily I'm mostly at home, and when I'm out am often in a disabled loo which has a sink in it.

That's such a brilliant idea.

I assume this was reply to the previous comment, for sadly my loo has no sink next to it.

After a few more months of use, mine is going all stainy in the holes and just under the outside of the rim, even though it's perfectly smooth... I have tried scrubbing it with a nail-brush to clean it up, but hey, even if it doesn't look brand new forever it's still going to look cleaner than the Mooncup with its writing and hollow stem. And it's hygienic enough.

Yeah, the hygiene is more important to me than the appearance. It's not exactly a fashion accessory :)

Yeah they look pretty interesting, if only from a design perspective.
