Trying Out Final Fantasy XIV

Doing these electric_challenge questions and watching Let's Plays made me realise I missed playing an MMO. So I downloaded the free trial of Final Fantasy 14, and have been having fun so far.

Meet Squiber Squar, a tiny archer on a search for adventure. She's a Lalafell, which are kinda like hobbits, and she's specifically Dunesfolk, who are nerds who live in the desert. They are SO TINY, like...below waist height to most other characters.


I started playing yesterday and right now am just wandering around doing basic quests like delivering letters and killing ladybugs. I'm not sure if I'll feel like paying the $20 a month or whatever it is when the trial runs out but am having fun so far. It's very pretty in a generic fantasy sort of way, I haven't spoken to any other real people but it's fun seeing their characters around and the NPCs have good enough dialogue to make the world feel fairly real. I'm playing on my Mac laptop with a PS4 controller, supplemented with the keyboard/trackpad when the UI confuses me.

I'm in Masamune on the Japanese server Mana. I thought about asking my friends who play what server to go on, but got paralysed by social anxiety about it, thanks brain.

Looks like I can't make characters on other worlds or move about much with my free account, but when/if I make a paid account I'll pop by :)

You should be able to make a new character, iirc, but Levi is pretty high population so do it late afternoon/early evening our time. You can only make new characters on Leviathan off-peak.

I can also give you an invitation to our Discord just if you want a place to be able to ask questions of nice people who you either know or know-people-who-know.

also tbh if you have to delete that character to move I think it might be worth it.

FF14 is Very Definitely an MMO, you can't really single-player it, and the advantage of the NA servers is that nearly everyone speaks English.

Plus, you know, FRIENDS.

Limsa Lominsa! Merlwyb is objectively the best out of the three city-state leaders so I think that's an excellent choice :)

there's a lot of things you can't do on a free trial but if you decide to stay sami and I will shower you in gil and invite you to our FC and do things with you :) (sadly trading and joining FCs are not allowed on free trial accounts!)
