OK, so my thoughts about Fridge: I think what they were aiming for with Fridge's arc is 'he needs to learn that strength isn't the only thing that's important'; what they should have been aiming for is 'he needs to learn to value his own intelligence as well as his strength.' While stuck as the underpowered sidekick character, Fridge's arc should have been about growing into the tactician of the group. Key changes here:
- some more emphasis in the Fridge-Spencer dynamic on why they used to be friends, the stuff they used to have in common, and the pressures on both Fridge and Spencer that pushed them into the roles they're in now - Fridge is the one who figures out that he can be dropped to receive the gem, rather than Spencer shoving him over the side without asking - Fridge explicitly builds on his knowledge of football plays etc. to develop and strategize the plan of attack in the finale - ... Fridge's avatar is probably not played by Kevin Hart, who spends that whole movie just playing Kevin Hart, and is instead played by someone like William Jackson Harper, who really leans into the character's nerdiness rather than just 'short and useless'
I did see the sequel and really liked it! They had SO much fun with the bodyswitching shenanigans and I loved that the main dynamic was "old men do not understand video games, eventually understand FRIENDSHIP." Also, as much as I thought Kevin Hart did not do justice to the character of Fridge in the first movie, I have to admit he does a truly stellar Danny DeVito.
My one complaint is that for a period of time, two characters who are romantically involved are in the avatars of Karen Gillan and Awkwafina and they do NOTHING with it. I was personally robbed of a Karen Gillan/Awkwafina kiss!
