First Sentence of Fanfic Meme

Tagged by [personal profile] anghraine, copying her in just doing the top ten by kudos.

Practical Applications of the Turing Test Portal, Chell/GlaDOS

The woman lay quietly, barely breathing.

Drama! Mystery! Who is this dying woman?? (Answer: GlaDOS. Which just creates more mystery and drama!)

The Scent of Honeysuckle Dragon Age, Cassandra/Josephine

First line of a quote from canon:
On aching branch do blossoms grow, the wind a hallowed breath.

I wanted to wallow in romance tropes, especially the ones from Cassandra's canon romance, so starting with the romantic poem she reads seemed appropriate. I mined the poem for this and another title, too.

First line by me:
Cassandra was halfway through her second set of sword exercises before she realised someone was quietly trying to get her attention.

I guess that's the fic! Josephine quietly but effectively getting Cassandra's attention, and Cassandra taking a little while to catch on.

The Life and Death of Setsuka Heel Skip Beat! Kyoko/Ren

Kyoko was a professional actor, and like any professional she was determined keep her mind on the job regardless of any personal feelings.

Ehh. A bit clunky. My manga based fic is often a little awkward, I find it hard to get into a nice rhythm while matching the tone of the translated text + pictures. Even if there's also an anime the manga tends to drown it out in my head.

Strictly Professional Yuri on Ice, Yuri/Victor

"I don't see why you should get to use our rink just because you're fucking Victor."

No dialogue tag, because you know exactly who's talking :D The line is designed to shock the reader a little, and set up the joke of Yuuri going WAIT WHAT NO I'M NOT that sets off the plot.

Sighs and Whispers Dragon Age, Cassandra/f!Inquisitor

"That is a pretty belt, Cassandra," said Leliana. "Did your secret admirer give it to you?"

Ha, another story where the second line is the POV character going WAIT WHAT NO to the setup from the first line, followed by it all coming true. Except unlike Yuri, Leliana knows exactly what she's doing.

Reactions: Before and After Dragon Age, Cassandra/Josephine (sequel to The Scent of Honeysuckle)

"You know that's not your heart right?"

This fic is basically just little snippets of snarky dialogue, as I imagined the other Inquisition characters reacting to the events of The Scent of Honeysuckle.

I can hear everyone who has ever beta-ed me wincing at the lack of a comma before "right". SORRY GUYS.

Five times Sara Crispino tried to get a boyfriend, and one time she didn't Yuri on Ice, Sara/Mila

"Sara," said Mila carefully. "Has it ever struck you that your brother is a little...weird?"

Can't have a Sara romance without addressing the Mickey Problem, might as well tackle it head on!

Circle Dance Akagami no Shirayuki-hime, Shirayuki/Zen/Obi

Shirayuki had seen a lot of naked men.

Hee. I am pretty happy with this one. For context, Shirayuki is a sweet, innocent woman who works as a pharmacist and healer. She is way less overtly sexual, and somewhat more passive, than the two dudes in the triad the fic is setting up, and I wanted to subvert the typical heteronormative tropes a little while keeping her in character.

A New Ideal Dragon Age, Cassandra/f!Inquisitor, though the first line is Aveline/Isabela

She caught her up in a punishing kiss. Their tongues battled for dominance, but this was a battle she knew she would win.

This is deliberately bad romance pastiche, and as such I'm pretty proud of it.

Wedding is Destiny, and Hanging Likewise Pride and Prejudice, Mary/Anne

First line of initial quote:
But you yourselves, I think, will allow that war, commerce, politics, exercises of strength and dexterity, abstract philosophy, and all the abstruser sciences, are most properly the province of men.

Pretty much every chapter of this fic starts with sexist quotes I then go on to subvert, this one works pretty well to start with though it's not very snappy.

First line by me:
Mary Bennet was a very accomplished girl.

The first line of fic I ever wrote and posted to the ao3! A bit dry, but works as a setup to the joke in next line: Everyone said so, although sometimes they had to be prompted a few times to say it.

Summary:

Ironic/misleading description of main character: 3
Describing events as they unfold: 3
Dialogue: 4
Humourous/ironic: 8

I am surprised there isn't more dialogue, since I am a very dialogue heavy writer, but not at all surprised at the amount of humour. I might push myself for more dramatically interesting beginnings.

I added the pairing and fandom because I am amused at how this top ten includes every single piece of Cassandra femslash fic I wrote within a year or two of Inquisition coming out. I've written one more recently which doesn't show up, since it missed the initial wave of enthusiasm. Meanwhile I have another, angstier Yuri/Victor fic which doesn't appear until a while later, despite that being a huge slash juggernaut.

Also note it's 70:10:10:10:0 for f/f, f/m, m/m, poly, and gen when my overall stats for fic are 31:47:10:10:34 (adding up to more than 100% due to crossover) The "unpopularity" of my het is because most of it is basically gen with a little bit of some canon pairing. On the whole: people like my happy, humourous, tropey romance with a little bit of plot, and I mostly write that for femslash.
