I am reminded of the time my Lit class went to see the Royal Shakespeare Company doing A Midsummer Night's Dream. Unsurprisingly, the production was excellent, which meant it was also extremely funny (particularly because Oberon, especially, would do things like look at the audience and raise an eyebrow suggestively for particularly filthy jokes), and there were some middle-aged-to-older women in the row in front of ours who kept turning around to glare balefully at us for laughing.
Most of the truly classic works of literature* are funny or have funny bits because people like to laugh.
* - that aren't Russian** ** - although those also might be funny in Russian to Russians, some of the Russian jokes I've heard do in fact boil down to: "It's funny because life is PAIN and existence is MEANINGLESS and hahahaha he had HOPE"
