Summary:
Alternate Title: "That One Grand Prix Final Where Sara Crispino Thought Her Life Was Fake Dating Het But It Was Actually Friends To Lovers Femslash"

I realised everything that could be wrong is either really minor or something I'm too attached to to change, so since getting it checked was taking a while just posted it. If I got something wrong, let me know, if only so my next fic will be less wrong :)

Speaking of which: The moment writing this fic where I went "Oh crap, why can't Sara just date Phichit? They'd be really cute together??" has led me to start poking vaguely at an actual Sara/Phichit fake dating fic (which may turn into Mila/Sara/Phichit if I ever finish it) Which led me to pondering what Terrible Skating Movie Set In Italy she would make him watch after she was forced to sit through The King and The Skater 1 and 2.

The only real world one I could find was The Cutting Edge 2, which looks appropriately terrible. But a true equivalent would be a real famous non-Italian movie set in Italy to which I would tack on a gratuitous skating plot, like the YOI writers did with the King and I. So I looked up movies set in Italy, and the two that came up that I've seen are Roman Holiday (could be cute, but a bit too similar to The King And I, maybe?) and...The Talented Mr Ripley.

And I just. The Talented Mr Ripley plus ice skating. Do I want to do this. We will see.

EDIT: Waaait. WAIT. The Talented Mr Ripley plus ice skating and lesbians.

Somehow I got inspired to write a fic which almost describes actual sex.

Summary: If this is all they can have, then it's enough. An attempt to figure out what was going on in Yuuri and Victor's heads.

And now I have an idea for a femslash fic and because the show is about male figure skaters am having to do research on female figure skating to create original characters and routines etc...and am actually enjoying watching figure skating. And getting attached to the different skaters and having opinions on who is better! Special shoutout to Brooklee Han for being a maths nerd Australian(*) and Evgenia Medvedeva for being an anime nerd who skated Sailor Moon and is into Yuri on Ice herself.

THIS IS ALMOST LIKE ENJOYING SPORT. And I know hating sport is a Thing among nerds but seriously I usually really hate sport. And am not all that much into watching dancing either. Apparently all I needed was to be thinking about how I can use it as inspiration to write shippy subtext. It helps that the skater I'm using as a vague base for Sara, Roberta Rodeghiero, skated to Let It Go, which is such a perfect song for a woman moving on from a somewhat incestuous relationship with her brother to get a girlfriend (specifically Mila, who I am basing on Ashley Wagner, even though she's from the US, since she posted about her resemblance to Mila in a tweet)

(*)Or at least someone who competes for Australia. She was born in the US and only moved here after she fell in love with ice skating, poor thing.

This was hailed in femslasher gamer circles as The First Real Yuri Game On Steam, and so even though it hit a lot of my Do Not Want buttons (including being quite expensive haha) I eventually gave in and gave it a go. And, as the subject of this post suggests, I have very mixed feelings.

I thought I had a post like this but apparently not! I've put (nb) next to the games with non binary options and (mm) next to games that include m/m paths. I haven't labelled games with m/f paths because that's pretty much all of them!

If you want even more, English Otome Games has a list of dating sims with a female protagonist and male and female or only female love interests, and Hella Yuri curates a list of games with wlw characters on Steam.

So after MUCH PROMPTING from some of my friends I watched the anime .hack//sign and it was exactly as relevant to my interests as they said it would be: explorations of the nature of self, people being permanently damaged by life but continuing on, computers and the internet, an ensemble cast where everyone's sympathetically drawn including the morally ambiguous and antagonistic characters, canon f/f, varied and complex female characters, a sympathetic disabled major character who neither dies nor gets cured, consistent character arcs that go to dark and distressing places but end in growth and happiness. It was a bit slow and confusing, and the depiction of disability is well meaning but flawed, but I'm still really glad I watched it. Definitely suits watching in one go, there's a lot of individual episodes where not much happens.

I made a meme image of how wrong my expectations were: I'd somehow gotten the impression it was "plucky regular kid gets stuck in weird online game, goes on generic fantasy adventures trying to get free" story, but it was in fact "weird kid gets stuck in (mostly) regular online game, everyone else tries to persude him that being stuck in an game is WEIRD AND BAD but he tells them to get lost". The MMO (massively multiplayer online game, like World of Warcraft) setting is used to give everything an air of fantasy, but the only people who talk like fantasy characters are pretentious roleplayers, death is an inconvenience, and people have to log off to do homework etc. It's not a fantasy story using an MMO as a gimmick, it's actually about playing MMOs, and the way online games and communities can be important to people. There is some very late 90s/early 2000s-ish WEIRD METAPHORICAL SCIFI STUFF, and some odd choices about what to show and what to imply, but unlike most weird 90s/early 2000s anime it all makes a moderate amount of sense in the end and even more after reading some wiki pages. And the characters! I love them all, even the annoying or antagonistic ones.

A note about the series episode structure, no spoilers )

Now the MAJOR SPOILERS I was told before I watched it which made me more enthusiastic. If you're already planning on watching the show then don't click!

Which is to say, I was VERY WOOZY for some of these.

Games (mostly from the currently ongoing steam sale):

Scribblenauts Unlimited (windows only): Solve people's problems by creating/editing objects. Fun, but you play as a guy saving his sister, and everytime you finish a level you gain another sibling as a possible avatar and ALL FORTY OF THEM are male. I checked! WHY NOT MAKE HALF OF THEM GIRLS. OR EVEN ONE OF THEM. They're not even compulsory so dude players wouldn't have to play as a girl, but girl players could! This annoys me so much I have stopped playing. IT'S SO UNNECCESARILY SEXIST. (Non binary/ungendered characters would also be good but if they can't manage girls)

Grim Legends: the Forsaken Bride: a Hidden object game from Artifex Mundi, only just started. Graphics are a bit uncanny valley but it's a nicely immersive Olde Worlde village setting. So far you're a woman rescuing your sister.

Higurashi When They Cry: Stalled on this completely. It's not bad, I just find it hard to keep up momentum with kinetic novels (like a visual novel but with no real choices)

Message Quest: a puzzle game about a lazy messenger in a fantasy world trying to avoid doing his quest. Has occasional simple turn based combat and I got stuck on a battle, but was enjoying it until then and will use a walkthrough to get past it at some point. Has some things that made me :/ about gender but is ultimately good hearted. It's a bit weird having to poke a lazy character who "just wants to sleep" when you have cfs, but he really is just lazy.

Audiosurf 2: Crashed on both windows and Mac :/

Books:

The Raven and the Reindeer by T Kingfisher aka Ursula Vernon: this is a very cute Gerta/Little Robber Girl retelling of The Snow Queen. It's in a light, fairytale style but has a bit more modern fantasy novel to it than the original 19th century children's short story. There also a bit more gore than I remember, of just the sort I like but other people may not. I haven't read the original in years so can't say how much is changed in general, but was attached to the Kay/Gerta friendship which is much more unhealthy here, I think it works really well as a new story but was still slightly sad to lose the old one. Also there's that undertone of slightly smug tweeness that tends to underlie all of Ursula Vernon's work, and it took me a while to get into it for some reason. Still, lots of well drawn, endearing, mostly female characters, and a cute fantasy story that hasn't lost the fairytale atmosphere, bittersweet bite and sense of place of the original.

(putting above the cut because "f/f fairytale" is relevant to a lot of my readers' interests :))

Aso, while I'm here: Steam is having a sale on anime themed games and I at least didn't get an email about some stuff on my wishlist which is discounted. So, check your wishlist!

As always, bear in mind that my standard go way down when I'm sick.

Books:

Sword of the Guardian by Merry Shannon (On sale right now!) This is basically a cheesy, tropey 90s-esque eurofantasy romance... with lesbians! AND I LOVED IT. Stoic, protective, crossdressing butch bodyguard and feisty, headstrong princess yesss. Many of the tropes are questionable-if-iddy (eg there's a bunch of dub con kisses that "don't count") to outright unfortunate ("swarthy barbarians", really?) and it is SUPER earnest but the ratio of cheese I enjoyed to cheese I didn't worked for me. nb the cover art whitewashes the bodyguard, who has a dark olive complexion which is a bit exoticised.

Apparently the sequel is about the buxom lesbian chambermaid, SOUNDS GOOD.

Had a great time! Was very tired, and am now utterly drained, so there has been and will be a lot of resting.

Notes for the Hanako Games panel
Notes for the Femslash Panel

I also did a Dragon Age panel with no real notes and a guy called Jetha I'd never met before. But he was great! They all had small audiences but went pretty well.

Didn't speak to any of the guests. John Scalzi was entertaining from a distance. Talked to lots of people I haven't seen for ages which was great *waves* Con was very accessible which was great. The Pan Pacific even labelled which buffet dishes were dairy free (none of the desserts ;-;)

I took a very small amount of notes for some panels but they are alllll the way over in my bag so maybe later.

More TV!

Fresh Off The Boat: "Man gives voiceover of his childhood" sitcom about a Taiwanese-American boy growing up in the 90s. I watched the 4-5 episodes I could get to on Hulu and enjoyed it well enough but I'm not really into such a typical boy-growing-up narrative. The woman playing the mother is cute though >.>

Sailor Moon (original anime): Very dated and slow but enjoyable as 90% fluffy repetitive magical girl action/drama/comedy, 10% ongoing narrative. MUCH SLOWER than Crystal but overall much better. Even the 90s art style has grown on me, I like how cuddly and expressive it is. I could do without the ALL GIRLS LOVE ROMANCE AND WEDDINGS etc but I like how explicitly pro-girl it is, even if the definition of girl is old fashioned. I also love that Usagi is a female reluctant hero-because-of-fate-not-competence who freaks out and ignores her duties and falls for every pretty face, but is ultimately a good and heroic person. It's cool to find myself falling for all these characters I've been seeing fanart etc of for so long. I'm currently up to episode 39, apparently there's like 60 episodes to go until the canon f/f I was hoping to see before Swancon /o\

Yurikuma Arashi: Continues to be the Weird Lesbian Bear show. The worldbuilding is completely ridiculous and the fanservice gratuitous but I like the characters and find the plot and relationships compelling. Also there's SO MUCH FEMSLASH. This is the kind of show where you constantly feel like you're just about to understand everything, so I put off watching until there was a bunch built up and I needed to distract myself from some pain. It did a very good job of distracting me but now I want more! And the plot does seem to fit together pretty well in a bizarre sort of way. Note that there is a LOT of off screen sexualised violence, and lots of on screen...violentised sexiness.

I staretd making on as a 10 minute thing and it blew up on me :) Looking for anything from "let me do most of the talking/planning but offer the odd alternative POV" to having the talk be as much yours as mine, I have maybe 30 minutes of slides plus some vids but am flexible.

(The other panel I decided on was Hanako Games, which fits into 10 minutes nicely)
alias_sqbr: (happy dragon)
So Swancon this year is doing ten minute presentations which sounds like fun but I can't decide what to talk about. Anyone got anything you'd like to see me rant about for ten minutes? Or think Swancon could benefit from? If you don't go to swancon you can probably still see it: I'll need to practice and get my timing right so I'm thinking I'll do up a youtube version.

One thing Swancon often misses out on is femlash fandom, in as much as it talk about transformative works at all there's generally a pretty strong focus on slash. That's a pretty big topic though.

So, some thoughts:

  • Dragon Age
  • Hanako Games
  • A brief intro to femslash fandom (what is it, where do you find it. Give a basic intro for outsiders, give hints of where to look next for anyone interested)
  • A brief history of femslash fandom? In contrast to the tradional "fandom begins and ends with slash" version of transformative fandom history. I'm not much of a fannish historian though.
  • Speculative f/f romance. Nice and focussed, positive, wouldn't require too much boring research. Only downside is I got two similar panels up last year. Could include popular f/f fandoms, I guess, and I'd have images.
  • Something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT which my brain is not supplying me right now.
alias_sqbr: Nepeta from Homestuck looking grumpy in front of the f/f parts of her shipping wall (grumpy)
Some more stuff I have watched and read recently! Links for those where you may want to see if they're as odd as they sound.

A Lily Among Thorns by Rose Lerner: a sweet regency romance where the female lead is an ex sex worker! Also the secondary romance is m/m!! Longer review at my tumblr.

If you're judging me for that rec you should probably stop reading now.

Overall the show ended really well, and if you gave up in books 1 or 2 it has gotten much better since then.

The main issue with this season is that it gave me what I wanted, eg one of the weirdly hot animated morally ambiguous badass butch brunette women is in her 30s instead of super young or super old...and she's basically Hitler. THANKS SHOW. THAT TOTALLY MAKES ME FEEL LESS WEIRD.

I was boggling that I hadn't done one of these since June then looked at my post titles for the last few months and remembered how sick I was for a while there. Most interesting:
News From The Sea: A little fantasy comic adapted from this short story I wrote. Created for a Comic Books and Graphic Novels course. Transcripts in chapter 2.

As far as I can tell I got...120% for this comic? And that's getting less than half of the available extra credit. lol coursera. But it was fun!

alias_sqbr: the symbol pi on a pretty background (Default)
While I wait for Guild Wars to finish updating...

Doctor Who: Became increasingly irritated with this latest season, may give it another go if I get sufficiently bored.

The Flash: Mostly an ok if bland superhero show about a regular Dude Who Gets Powers, but without giving spoilers...despite one of the major secondary characters being in a wheelchair this is not the background-depiction-of-disability I was hoping for :/ :/

Yuki Yuna Is A Hero: Moe magical girl show where one of the girls is in a wheelchair. Started off GREAT, the chair wasn't even mentioned she was just one of a group of friends. But once the first monster arrived it was all "plucky able bodied girl loyally defends sad useless disabled girl" and "leave me to die, I will just slow you down". Apparently she gets powers in episode 2 that allow her to fight without removing her paraplegia, which is great, but I haven't had the heart to try it.

Sakura Trick: So I made it to the end and did actually enjoy this, god help me. It is solid male-gaze moe f/f fluff, but there's no rape, underage sex, or incest, and only a small amount of sexual harassment! And the girls friendships are genuinely pretty sweet and the f/f relationships are taken seriously rather than being a cute phase they're expected to outgrow. And it was mildly funny sometimes! IT IS ALSO EXPLOITATIVE AS HELL. It depresses me that this is apprently the best I can hope for :( :(
