Summary:
Alternate Title: "That One Grand Prix Final Where Sara Crispino Thought Her Life Was Fake Dating Het But It Was Actually Friends To Lovers Femslash"

I realised everything that could be wrong is either really minor or something I'm too attached to to change, so since getting it checked was taking a while just posted it. If I got something wrong, let me know, if only so my next fic will be less wrong :)

Speaking of which: The moment writing this fic where I went "Oh crap, why can't Sara just date Phichit? They'd be really cute together??" has led me to start poking vaguely at an actual Sara/Phichit fake dating fic (which may turn into Mila/Sara/Phichit if I ever finish it) Which led me to pondering what Terrible Skating Movie Set In Italy she would make him watch after she was forced to sit through The King and The Skater 1 and 2.

The only real world one I could find was The Cutting Edge 2, which looks appropriately terrible. But a true equivalent would be a real famous non-Italian movie set in Italy to which I would tack on a gratuitous skating plot, like the YOI writers did with the King and I. So I looked up movies set in Italy, and the two that came up that I've seen are Roman Holiday (could be cute, but a bit too similar to The King And I, maybe?) and...The Talented Mr Ripley.

And I just. The Talented Mr Ripley plus ice skating. Do I want to do this. We will see.

EDIT: Waaait. WAIT. The Talented Mr Ripley plus ice skating and lesbians.

A fannish charity auction, where people offer to write fix/draw fanart etc and whoever makes the highest bid donates that much to charity and gets what they want made.

Here's my page, but if this post helps you find someone else to bid on I'm just as happy.

Bidding closes 19 January 2017 (Midnight, EST).

Somehow I got inspired to write a fic which almost describes actual sex.

Summary: If this is all they can have, then it's enough. An attempt to figure out what was going on in Yuuri and Victor's heads.

And now I have an idea for a femslash fic and because the show is about male figure skaters am having to do research on female figure skating to create original characters and routines etc...and am actually enjoying watching figure skating. And getting attached to the different skaters and having opinions on who is better! Special shoutout to Brooklee Han for being a maths nerd Australian(*) and Evgenia Medvedeva for being an anime nerd who skated Sailor Moon and is into Yuri on Ice herself.

THIS IS ALMOST LIKE ENJOYING SPORT. And I know hating sport is a Thing among nerds but seriously I usually really hate sport. And am not all that much into watching dancing either. Apparently all I needed was to be thinking about how I can use it as inspiration to write shippy subtext. It helps that the skater I'm using as a vague base for Sara, Roberta Rodeghiero, skated to Let It Go, which is such a perfect song for a woman moving on from a somewhat incestuous relationship with her brother to get a girlfriend (specifically Mila, who I am basing on Ashley Wagner, even though she's from the US, since she posted about her resemblance to Mila in a tweet)

(*)Or at least someone who competes for Australia. She was born in the US and only moved here after she fell in love with ice skating, poor thing.

Watching how much fun this Let's Player is having in Twilight Princess with RPG mechanics I find frustratingly difficult got me thinking about what it would be like to play an RPG I was that good at that.

I'm not likely to make one any time soon, since I have plenty of other games on my plate, but wanted to get my ideas down while they're fresh in my mind. I would be curious to hear other people's thoughts, especially people who, like me, enjoy RPGs in theory but find them a bit tricky in practice. It's impossible for one game to be good for everyone but it's still useful to know other people's preferences. I'd also love to hear any recs for games that sound suited to me!

Feeling motivated but sore, so, a post about various minor things.

First: SOON got (positively) reviewed by PC Power Play Australia!! It got ONE WHOLE EXTRA SALE (which was [personal profile] loic, seeing my post about it on Facebook but shh)

Second: yesterday I went to the Maylands festival and it was super fun, I had fancy meat from the gourmet butcher and fancy toasted marshmallows, and a baby goat at the petting zoo fell asleep in my lap omg it was SO CUTE. At first it was all "wtf who are you" but then it decided I was a friend and then it slowly calmed down and went to sleep. It was all brown with a cute little black nose and floppy ears. Having animals at petting zoos sit happily in my lap is an unexpected upside of the wheelchair. I smsed Cam (who was asleep when I left) that there were some nice looking fancy hotdogs (his weakness :D) so he came down and we had fun walking around together. The accessibility was unnecessarily poor, though, they blocked curb cuts and footpaths in a few places meaning I had to take complex detours a few times to get to things an able bodied person could just step to.

Third...uh...I had a weird pain in my side again? But then it went away? FUN TIMES.

Oh wait! Yeah! I went to the Swancon programming meeting, it was pretty good but I was the only non committee member there so am very glad I came to add a different POV. They want more diverse POVs so contact them with ideas for panels! Especially book/writing/academic/social justicey/cutting edge fandom stuff, since their strengths seem to be more older anime/tv/movie fandoms and fun interactive stuff. I took some notes I'll try and write up when less sleepy.

So [personal profile] tree gave me a fun lightsaber related art prompt, which led me to looking up Star Wars screenshots to get get a feel for the way the coloured light would reflect off noses etc. And realised it generally doesn't, at least not in the original trilogy and prequels.

Compare for example this shot of Anakin next to a blue lightsaber to this shot of a guy demonstrating his prop light saber. With Anakin, the only parts of his face that go blue are those directly under the halo of light around the saber. With a real glowing blue stick, blue light reflects off any part of the face facing the saber, even those a little distance away. It's even more obvious in promotion shots.

The new movies seem to do better. Compare this almost monochrome shot of Luke holding a blue lightsaber in the dark versus this shot of Finn with blue light all over the place.

I never noticed this before but now I can't unsee it. I guess doing all this 3D modelling has made me more aware of light reflections. And I mean, I understand! Adding in fast moving coloured lights is (a) tricky and (b)creates some weird effects that will often be counter to the visual look you want. But I feel better now about always having found getting lightsabers to "look right" a bit challenging :)

Still sick!
physical and mental health stuff )

It was funny poking at the Akagami no Shirayukihime fandom though. The canon relationship is the female main character Shirayuki with her male love interest Zen, but both have a close, somewhat shippy friendship with their mutual male friend Obi. My story is Shirayuki/Zen/Obi. (Will post properly later but if you're curious here it is)

On AO3 it’s mostly Shirayuki/Obi, Shirayuki/Zen, Shirayuki/Zen/Obi and a smattering of Obi/Zen, followed by relationships involving the other characters.

On fanfiction.net there’s a lot of Shirayuki/Zen and a little Shirayuki/Obi but no Shirayuki/Zen/Obi or Zen/Obi, my story aside. What there is is lots of fic like “When Zaara, half sister of Zen and Izana, and the illegitimate Princess of Clarines comes back home, Obi is the one tasked with her protection. He starts to grow closer to her as she takes him on crazy adventures, but underneath her fun and kind exterior, lies hidden secrets and sorrows. Obi/O.C. Crap summary, good story!”(*)

And the tumblr tag is a lot of gifsets of funny moments mixed with closeups of Shirayuki and Zen kissing.

(*)For all I know it is a good story, and given the nature of shoujo I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if something like this became canon. I am just amused at the difference in fic culture.

I've been doing a lot of experimenting with Artrage. I've gotten enough of the hang of it for game background paintovers but I think I need to get more practice with the fundamentals of painting before I can use it for portraits etc.

I've also started work on a new game, a picross/nonogram puzzle visual novel called Nona&Gram.

Stuff made by me:

My new best friend CASHEW CREAM. I kept seeing dairy free recipes using it and finally got around to making some, and it was as easy and creamy as they said. Just cashews and water in a food processor! You have to soak the cashews first but there isn't any complex straining etc like with almond milk. I've put it in pasta sauce, salad dressing, sandwiches, and on frozen fruit with sugar and vanilla essence, and they were all great. It's like a cross between ricotta and tofu: very bland, but a good base for other flavours. I used up my first batch and have another soaking to try ICECREAM :D

Second: The demo for Northanger Abbey: the Game, which I can objectively say is the best video game ever produced in the history of the world. And it's not even finished yet! So you should all play it and tell me what you thought. Criticism welcome, assuming you can deal with the responsibility of helping create an even better game.

Other people's stuff:

Neko Atsume: The cute cat based phone game everyone's playing. You put out food and toys to attract cats, who then reward you by playing adorably and with currency you can use to buy better food and toys and thus attract rarer cats. Impossible to lose and a little pointless but adorable enough that I'm still enjoying it. Free, with the option to buy in-game currency with real world money, but I haven't needed it.

The Room: a puzzle game for phones, where you try and unlock a multi-part locked box. I haven't gotten very far but it's enjoyable enough. Requires a payment of about $1.50 once you get past the free intro.

I've reached a point where I'd really like feedback on the game, if anyone would like to give some! Any sort of feedback is good, whether it be about the gameplay, characters, dialogue, art, etc, whether you're familiar with the original or not.

Download the game for Windows, Mac or Linux:

It's a visual novel based on Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, where you can choose the main character's name, gender(*), and behaviour. Depending on your choices you can (in the full game) form romantic or platonic relationships with five love interests: two men (John Thorpe and Henry Tilney), two women (Isabella Thorpe and MYSTERY LOVE INTEREST NOT SHOWN IN THIS DEMO), and one non binary (Eleanor Tilney, though she doesn't come out as non binary yet) If you behave exactly like the book's main character the book's plot unfolds unchanged, but if you don't things start to get quite different!

If you're familiar with the book, it stops just at the point where the main character gets invited to the Abbey (or doesn't ;)).

Current plans for this section of the game:

  • Neaten sprites, redraw any expressions lacking whites of eyes etc
  • Fill in all the dialogue currently marked ???
  • Add expression changes to some scenes which are missing them
  • Backgrounds, title screen, menu screen, pretty user interface (the current backgrounds are all going)
  • Music

(*)You can choose to be a man, woman, or non binary, choose to be afab, amab or intersex, and choose to present as male, female, or genderqueer. The 19th century is a very gendered society so this lets you be, say, a trans woman who crossdresses as a man to dance with women, but still thinks of herself as a woman and is referred to as one by those close to her. Eventually you will get the chance to come out to your LI, if relevant, and probably change your gender presentation again. Setting this fluidity up was easier than I expected and made writing the game much more interesting. Amab non binary "Catherine"/Henry Tilney is my new unexpected otp :D I'm cis myself, though, so feedback from trans people of all types would be very much appreciated!

There's less control over your sexuality: canon Catherine is attracted to pretty much everyone and develops a crush on Henry Tilney, and to begin with the main character is much the same because it got too hard otherwise. I need to edit to allow more flexibility, both for MCs who don't like Henry in particular and for those who don't see themselves as into men at all.

EDIT: updated with some suggestions and corrections!

Since people ask me about it sometimes. I am by no means an expert, other people's advice very much welcomed in the comments. (And I'm sure I have posted about this before but can't find it!)

So! For the last few years I've been selling art, shirts, stickers, and cards at redbubble. I make very little money off this (about $20 a year, looking at my receipts), but I also put in very little effort. In general, I've found it a pretty positive experience just challenging myself to try and be at least semi professional, making polished designs I think people will like and then having people like them. I sold a lot more when I was adding works to groups, commenting on other people's art, and promoting things on social media. This is probably necessary wherever you go.

And now, all the options I know of, and what little I know of them. I have only used redbubble.

These all sell clothes, prints, cards, and homewares with original designs:
  • redbubble The objects are fairly expensive even if you only add a small profit margin, but they're of reasonably high quality and the site is inviting for purchasers. The only criticism of redbubble I know of is that one time they refused to ban some offensive shirts, though I think they backpeddled after enough complaints. Also the shirt colours come out muted.
  • Society 6 Very similar to redbubble as far as I can tell.
  • Cafepress A bit cheaper/tackier, wide range of options, very easy to get started. You used to have to make a separate shop per design but I'm not sure you do any more.
  • Zazzle similar to cafepress, apparently better quality.

More specific:
  • Threadless Send in tshirt designs, they get voted on and if you win you get a set payout of a thousand dollars or so.
  • Teefury Send in tshirt designs, make $1 per shirt for 24 hours and keep your copyright.
  • Spoonflower: sell fabric, gift paper, and wallpaper with repeating designs.

If you google "cafepress redbubble society 6" you get a bunch of people comparing them and suggesting several other sites I'd never heard of, as well as suggestions on how to use them best. I found How to Make Money with Zazzle Redbubble and Cafepress interesting. Apparently I make double the average of $10 per year /o\

Finally: while you're here, check out my redbubble follows and buy some of my friends' stuff ;) (though I'm not friends with tanaudel I just think she's cool)
