Mush up Pirates of the Carribean with the original Guardians of the Galaxy in a blender with some cheese, and give it a flouro 80s candy coating, and you get this movie. If you can turn your brain off and enjoy the silliness and explosions it's pretty fun. Not very deep and mostly about A Man And His Father Issues but gives the female characters more to do than the last movie. The perfunctory attempts at a Peter/Gamora romance are ineffective but also pretty easy to ignore (I usually like that kind of pairing but this one doesn't work for me) and the Gamora and Nebula sister relationship gets the exploration that was missing from the original. I feel like they sanded off the unhealthiness of Peter and Yondu's relationship for convenience, but otherwise enjoyed the story, which is all about family. Mantis's character felt like a bit of an Asian stereotype but her arc was ok. None of the female characters get sexualised very much and Chris Pratt is super pretty.

So! I have been feeling a bit down recently for reasons I'm not going to go into in this post (I have realised that doing so makes me reluctant to read the comments, rather defeating the purpose) and would like some happy, positive human interaction.

So! If the mood strikes you, please comment with happy links, books/movies etc you've enjoyed recently, random cheerful comments about what you've been up to etc. No sympathy comments, I am not in the mood right now.

And to return the favour, here is my swancon costume as well as a mask I made. Also, here is some cute happy fixit art for Rogue One.

Also, while I'm here: hello to everyone who's been coming over to dreamwidth from livejournal!

Sorry to the many people I did not speak to/was vague at, I was EXTRA SPECIALLY sleepy this weekend, on the plus side all the resting I had to do means I don't actually feel that bad now.

Between all the resting I still had a pretty good time! The Metro's accessibility issues weren't as bad as I thought they'd be, and having Cam to drive me around meant the lack of nearby restaurants wasn't too big of an issue for me personally. Didn't make many panels but the ones I went to were fun, and next years con looks pretty promising. The only guest I really talked to was Joyce Chng/[twitter.com profile] jolantru but she was very nice and had interesting things to say.

I wore a they/them pronoun sticker and mentioned my genderfluidness when it was relevant, and got no negative pushback whatsoever. I think partly because a sticker on the bottom of a lanyard on a wheelchair using short person with boobs is not going to be noticed by most people, but I'm still counting it as a win.

I didn't take a lot of notes but what I have is under the cut. The con used the Grenadine event management system for the first time, it worked pretty well from my end and is reminding me of what I did.

The fact that I am reviewing three books from this series after starting the first one a few days ago may give some idea of how much I've enjoyed them!

The flippant summary is that they're slightly grimdark Terry Pratchett. They also reminded me of the Laundry Files, with the Strange Magics And Ancient Gods mixed up with corporations and law/analysis instead of public service and pure maths/physics.

Also: they're on sale on the Kindle and Apple stores (and maybe other places?) right now after being nominated for a Hugo! There's a bundle sale...somewhere, apparently, but I only found out after buying them individually, oops.

To tide myself over until the final episode of The Adventure Zone I paid $5 to gain access to the subscriber extras on Maximum Fun. There's 5 Adventure Zone episodes: a prequel where the gang meets, a stand alone Beach Episode, and three episodes of "The Adventure Zone: Nights", a separate campaign run by Travis.

The first two weren't super exciting but cute. The Adventure Zone: Nights took a while to grow on me, especially since Travis turned out to be the kind of nerdy dude who starts with FIFTEEN MINUTES of worldbuilding and then fills his dungeons with mazes full of logic puzzles, not the recipe for a compelling podcast. Also I'm attached to the regular characters, and three episodes isn't enough for these new ones to gain much depth, though it was interesting seeing everyone play someone different. (Griffin is a nebbishy warlock bartender, Justin a quietly badass female monk, and Clint a loudmouth bard)

But then in the final episode...Lin Manuel Miranda shows up? As a bard who sings his way out of trouble??

So yeah, if you want to hear Lin Manuel Miranda use an original battle rap to lower the self esteem of a robot, consider subscribing to Maximum Fun! The episode is still largely kinda dry, listening to someone roleplay methodically destroying 50 barrels to find the one with the gem they need is boring even if the ropleplayer is a Tony award winner. But I feel like I got my $5 worth overall, especially when you consider the 50+ free Adventure Zone episodes I've listened to and enjoyed. I've cancelled my subscription again, but will happily pay another $5 if they add more bonus content I'm interested in.

Also note: the third TAZ:N episode is labelled "TAZ:N 2" for some reason. Read the summaries carefully.

My tl;dr review: this is a profoundly mediocre game that I mostly enjoyed. I wanted a mostly upbeat game where I got to play a queer woman exploring planets, shooting bad guys, and and kissing cute girl aliens, and that's what I got. If there were any other games that let me do all that I might have been more dissappointed with the quality of the experience, but there basically aren't, so. Also I had a health downswing so bad I'd normally have to lie in bed playing hidden object games for a week, which made the drawn out, simplistic nature of the game kind of a plus. My enjoyment fell pretty drastically once I got better haha.

Many people have gone into the game's flaws, and they are all absolutely correct! So I'm going to use them to structure my review. The reasons these flaws didn't ruin the game for me are all very subjective, this is definitely not a game for everyone.

I'm assuming you've played a Mass Effect game before, if you haven't: play one of the other Mass Effect games instead. They are all much better games. This game is for people who have run out of good Mass Effect games and want more badly enough to lower their standards.

Am trying very hard to not be a jerk about the “what if Jane Austen wrote Star Trek” post a few people have reblogged today on tumblr but godddd how can so many people take these canons that are WALL TO WALL social commentary and jokes and throw away everything except (to me) secondary aspects like character quirks and a distinctive use of semi colons.

Like...I have been rereading a bunch of Jane Austen’s character descriptions recently for a Thing, and I am pretty sure she was incapable of describing anyone for more than a sentence without insulting them, and then probably making some jab at the hypocrisy of whoever is observing them.

I was going to say this is like people in two hundred years writing about Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert and putting a lot of effort into making the language and fashion accurate but having the Daily Show just be a mainstream, earnest news show that never makes jokes but...people kind of do that now, and I GUESS it’s ok that they’re enjoying themselves, and that not everyone has fun the same way I do. I GUESS. MAYBE.

It mostly annoys me because it's not just a subset of fans doing this. There's room for all sorts. But the intellectually shallow nostalgia driven approach is the default across all of popular culture, and the more visible and well funded the adaptation the more likely it is to ignore the things that make the original unique and challenging. (I just had the mental image of Zach Snyder's Pride and Prejudice. That would be...something)

It's also possibly relevant that I am ok at matching Jane Austen's sarcasm but gave up on the semi colons entirely; this may affect my idea of the core traits of an Austen pastiche.

It's currently possible to play ten hours of Mass Effect Andromeda if you sign up for EA's streaming service Origin Access. This costs about $7, and you get 10% off the $80+ game, so, definitely worth doing if you are pondering buying it!

I have played 6 and a bit hours, which was enough to get to a large area that will probably take more than 3 hours to finish satisfyingly, so I'm stopping for now. It's been fun! I'll try to avoid any major spoilers in my thoughts below but minor ones will come up.

No zombies or anything too sexy or squicky, and if it’s a canon I’m not familiar with I’ll need image refs.

For those needing some inspiration, and to test out dreamwidth's new image posting capabilities, here's a fun pose I have saved in my reference folder, as well as some from the ever inspiring Sailor Sakky DeviantArt. Choose a pose and give me a subject!

To try and tide myself over until the next episode I had a look at the AO3 Adventure Zone section, and had a surprisingly strong NOPE reaction to all the fic. So I thought about what fic I would theoretically write, and all my ideas felt kind of wrong too.

On further thought I've decided it's because of the nature of the canon.

So I am up to date on all 56 episodes of the Adventure Zone and I love it and I want MORE why do I have to WAIT?? I have a few standalone episodes I haven't listened to yet but right now I want the end to this arc not something else.

It continues to be a very funny, meta, rule-bending dungeons and dragons game, but what started out as a fairly generic fantasy plot livened up by jokes has become a really engaging and well written fantasy plot livened up by jokes, and the characters have gained some depth.

It actually reminds me a lot of Homestuck, it's not remotely as convoluted but has similar slapdash fourth-wall-breaking pop-culture-heavy humour that somehow forms a weirdly coherent and surprisingly affecting whole.

Other similarities: none of the characters have canon appearances, the creators are supportive of fanart to the extent that there's official Fanart Spinoffs, and despite being 30 something white American dudes(*) with typical dirty nerdboy humour and blind spots there's obvious attempts at diversity, specifically lots of female characters and some canon m/m(**) and f/f. There's even a canon, sympathetic, background non binary character! Who was a construct but the non binariness was never a big deal and they got canon "they" pronouns, which was nice. (Some of the guys took a while to stop defaulting to "he" but they all got it by the end)

(*)And one 60 year old dude who doesn't try as hard in this respect.
(**) hearing two brothers roleplay a date between one of the main characters and an NPC was kinda weird but I still ship it haha.

The in-laws who invited us have lived in Australia for over a decade, so will be expecting us to be clueless, but it would be nice to avoid any major impoliteness. I know wearing black and white is considered bad luck for Chinese new year, but all I could find about Korean new year is that hanboks are traditional, and that's not really an option. I guess...something nice? BUT HOW NICE.

A page suggested red and gold for Chinese new year, but idk if that would come across as polite or SO YOU ARE BASICALLY CHINESE RIGHT.

I asked my brother for advice but having seen how blase he was about Hannukah I don't have huge faith in his ability to notice or care about this stuff.

We should probably be giving gifts of money to the children?? Gifts make me so anxious /o\ I'm going to wait on that for next year, I think, trying to guess how to do it is just too scary. Especially because I don't know for sure how many kids are coming, and only getting some of them gifts would be way worse than getting none.

Still, I guess at least I have an excuse for feeling clueless about these social mores.

Summary:
Alternate Title: "That One Grand Prix Final Where Sara Crispino Thought Her Life Was Fake Dating Het But It Was Actually Friends To Lovers Femslash"

I realised everything that could be wrong is either really minor or something I'm too attached to to change, so since getting it checked was taking a while just posted it. If I got something wrong, let me know, if only so my next fic will be less wrong :)

Speaking of which: The moment writing this fic where I went "Oh crap, why can't Sara just date Phichit? They'd be really cute together??" has led me to start poking vaguely at an actual Sara/Phichit fake dating fic (which may turn into Mila/Sara/Phichit if I ever finish it) Which led me to pondering what Terrible Skating Movie Set In Italy she would make him watch after she was forced to sit through The King and The Skater 1 and 2.

The only real world one I could find was The Cutting Edge 2, which looks appropriately terrible. But a true equivalent would be a real famous non-Italian movie set in Italy to which I would tack on a gratuitous skating plot, like the YOI writers did with the King and I. So I looked up movies set in Italy, and the two that came up that I've seen are Roman Holiday (could be cute, but a bit too similar to The King And I, maybe?) and...The Talented Mr Ripley.

And I just. The Talented Mr Ripley plus ice skating. Do I want to do this. We will see.

EDIT: Waaait. WAIT. The Talented Mr Ripley plus ice skating and lesbians.

Someone a while ago asked me what the use of powdered peanut butter was asides from making low fat peanut butter.

The two key features: 1) It's a dry powder. 2) it's water soluble, and dissolves quite easily.

1) is useful for adding dry coatings to stuff. I put peanut butter powder+flour+seasoning on some baked zuchinni the other day and it was very nice! Also if you have a slightly too damp or oily sandwich the powder can dry it out eg it makes for less mushy peanut butter and banana toasted sandwiches.

2) is useful for adding peanut butter flavour to things without that annoying dissolving-in-hot-liquid step. This is especially useful for cold things like cereal or salad dressing. I'll just sprinkle peanut butter powder and fish sauce on chopped cucumbers sometimes, and just had a very tasty bowl of mock honey nut cornflakes using butterscotch syrup. It's great mixed into chia seed pudding and other cold desserts, it has enough sugar and salt to create a nice flavour.

You can also use it as an odd sort of vegan milk powder, but I only did this on holiday because I had no other option. I think you could maybe use it as a seasoned high protein flour substitute in something like no-bake date and nut balls etc.

I'm not sure what I'll do when my current jar runs out since it's not sold in Australia. I'll have to see if there's somewhere I can import it from, or I'll be a little sad!
