Dentist!

Saw the dentist at Maylands Dental Centre. They were wheelchair accessible and very friendly and nice even when I put a small dent in the wall and then my card was declined and I had to go home to pay them electronically /o\ (I had the money but had forgotten to make sure it was in the right account) The dentist was very competent but the assistant kept getting the water-vacuum briefly stuck on my tongue etc which was annoying.

My teeth are apparently in pretty good shape! When I said I used to eat lots of sugary and acidic foods but had to stop for health reasons she said "Well, you're not missing out, sugar is terrible!". Lady, we both know that is a lie. I apparently have mild gum disease and need to floss more, which I got all inspired about but we'll see if I actually buy any floss lol. Last time I went to the dentist, *cough* years ago, they said I had signs of tooth grinding but apparently I don't now, must be because I went off cymbalta.

Before dentist appointments I always get anxious about cavities etc but forget how unpleasant having my teeth cleaned is. Ugh. But I do like the idea of getting rid of my gum disease since apparently that can have all sorts of nasty systemic side effects. (But flossing suuuuucks)

A fluffier, less morally ambiguous Farscape/Firefly-ish "found family of misfits have adventures in space" story where everyone is nice and there's a very obvious attempt at inclusiveness and diversity, including POC, queer, and disabled characters in significant roles getting to be fully rounded and happy. It's very comforting and light but still has enough narrative tension and plot to be engaging. Also, there's AIs. Overall I quite enjoyed it!

EDIT: After ranting to a friend my issues boil down to (a) It feeling pointedly Progressive while actually having a bunch of unfortunate implications (b) the author wanting the heroes to be Good People Who Do The Right Thing to an extent that felt morally and intellectually lazy especially given the author's narrow vision of what "good people" can look like.

But it rubbed me the wrong way 'progressive' speculative fiction often does )

Cliche in the sense of the asshole dominant dude and sweet innocent woman etc.

The dynamic I don't like:

Her: Sure, he's hot, but what an asshole!
Him: Sure, she's nice, but so plain!
Him: I'm warming up to her...but cannot admit it!
Everyone: Naturally! Because she is the perfect woman.
Her: I'm warming up to him...but cannot admit it!
Everyone: Naturally! Because he is the perfect man.
Them: You're right! Let's get married ^_^

The dynamic I do:

Her: Sure, he's hot, but what an asshole!
Him: Sure, she's nice, but so plain!
Him: I'm warming up to her...but cannot admit it!
Everyone: Makes sense: she's nice enough, and doesn't seem cowed by your crap.
Him: ACTUALLY SHE SUCKS (actually she is perfect ;_;)
Her: I'm warming up to him...but cannot admit it!
Everyone: WTF. NO. HE IS AN ASSHOLE. GO DATE THIS NICER DUDE.
Her: I KNOW. IT MAKES NO SENSE. AND YET.

I'm not saying this dynamic is good or feminist, and there's others I like more. But it's surprisingly enjoyable considering how much I hate the first dynamic.

Current example, which I read in a block when I had insomnia last night but in the light of day am having to finish in small chunks so I can take a break from the ridiculousness: Midnight Secretary, a manga about a secretary to a vampire who selfishly gives women amazing orgasms because it makes their blood taste better. Which is a pretty clever excuse for sexy dubcon blood drinking that DOESN'T MEAN HE LIKES HER HE JUST GOT HUNGRY OK, congratulations Ohmi Tomu.

Previous examples: the manga (also an anime) Wolf Girl and Black Prince, Jane Eyre.

Arrival

This is a really good, thoughtful, humanist science fiction movie. It doesn't turn into horror or action halfway through, it's just about ideas and emotional truth. The heroine isn't badass in any traditional sense, but is still great, and gets treated like a real person instead of a Girl (eg she wears sensible clothes with her hair in a ponytail in situations where that's what any real person would do)

At times it crossed my personal line from "meditative and beautiful" into "ponderously slow" for a minute or two, and I imagine that if "linguist solves alien language problem by thinking about it very seriously" isn't your idea of a good time you'd it boring. But I loved it!

I read the original short story years ago and feel like the movie captures the stuff I loved about it (and I loved it a lot), some aspects didn't translate well to film (eg they do cut out the more technical linguistics) but other parts worked amazingly well. Knowing the plot didn't ruin my enjoyment but Cam LOVED the experience of going in unspoiled and I'm a little sad not to have experienced that.

There's very little "hard science" as in physics etc, Jeremy Renner's physicist character mainly serves as a sidekick. (I think the most sciencey thing he does to progress the plot is solve a fraction) But it's hard scifi in the sense of being about ideas. But also feelings! And a compassion for all people which is something I needed right now. It's also really visually effective, I'm glad we saw it at the cinema.

While ultimately uplifting in a bittersweet sort of way there's some very sad moments and it made me cry.

Content warning about one specific kind of sadness below. This stuff comes up in the first few scenes and I don't spoil anything past that point.

A space opera novel I wanted to like more than I did. In terms of basics it was good, I breezed through it quickly and was engaged the whole way through. But I am left feeling a bit meh now I'm done.

The things people recommended it to me for: diversity, space opera, robots, and maths.
My tl;dr thoughts on which are, respectively: good, ok, ok, and meh )

So yesterday we went to Universal Studios Hollywood! And to give an idea how tiring it was, we both slept in until 8:30am this morning instead of the usual 5am, got some shopping, then napped until 2pm. It had a few hurdles, both expected and wtf, but was overall a great day.

So it looks like waking up at 4-5am is becoming a pattern, on the plus side that gives me time to write this kind of post and plan. Yesterday morning I sat down with a map of Disneyland and added all the charging stations/power points (an image I plan to neaten up then put online, since noone else seems to have made one) then planned out what I wanted to do assuming Cam also woke early and we could take advantage of the one early morning start ("Magic Morning") you can do with a 5 day ticket. And he did!
NOTE: mention of implied fictional rape )

Today was actually really great! And TIRING, but in a good way. Photos to be added once I post them to tumblr.

Everything is super commercial and fake but I have decided to try and just roll with it and enjoy it for what it is. It's authentic to it's own culture of inauthenticity! And the Disney Corporation got it's claws into my id young enough that even when part of me is thinking "this is silly/cheesy" another part is going "AHHHHHHHH DISNEYLAND :D :D". I'm not sure if it's because Halloween is approaching or if it's like this all the time but there's lots of people of all ages in costume or themed outfits. Every time I see a little Rey my heart grows three sizes.

It's interesting thinking about how things are set up having worked at a museum aimed at kids. And everything is wheelchair accessible. It's great.

And now, details )

So things have NOT BEEN IDEAL but are looking up. Here's some rambly thoughts, with a lot of stuff about issues relating to my illnesses cos I know that's something I like to hear about from travelers with similar issues. I may make a shorter, pithier post later with the more interesting details.

So! Short summary of the trip:
Planes from Perth to Melbourne (2.5 hour trip starting at midnight with a 4 hour layover) to LA (14 hour trip), then the Disneyland Express bus to the Howard Johnson hotel with a power chair hired from One Stop Mobility.
